JOB PURPOSE
As part of the Emergency Program, provides leadership to the patient care team to ensure quality of patient care through planning, organizing and coordinating human, financial and material resources. Ensures that patient care meets standards of practice and systems/processes of care are continually improving. Ensures adequate patient flow and removes barriers. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Active registration with NANB
- Baccalaureate degree in nursing
- Minimum 5 years progressive nursing experience, including recent Emergency Department nursing experience and skills
- Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) certification in Emergency Nursing or commitment to achieve certification within the minimum eligibility timeframe.
- Current BCLS certification
- Demonstrated leadership and managerial skills including innovative planning, organizing, group facilitation and problem solving
- Demonstrated ability to quickly identify problems and develop solutions that are patient focused and evidence based
- Ability to demonstrate strong clinical judgement as it relates to emergency, trauma, mental health and forensic nursing
- Demonstrated teaching, communication, interpersonal and team-building skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with a variety of health care providers, including nurses, physicians, managers and staff from other disciplines
- Good work record and ability to attend work on a regular basis
- Ability to perform the duties of the position

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Patient Care Management
- Develops systems of patient care, which are consistent with legislation, evidence-based decision-making and standards of practice
- Promotes patient/family/community education consistent with health status
- Initiates, implements and evaluates activities to continually improve the quality of patient care
- Organizes patient care resources appropriate to the needs of patients and families
Human Resource Management
- Promotes positive relationships with other members of the patient care team
- Functions as a resource to others based on her/his area of expertise
- Hires, orients and manages staff performance as determined by human resources policies, collective agreements, legislation and standards of practice
- Assists staff members to develop a knowledge base and clinical skills appropriate to professional practice
- Develops and maintains effective relationships with outside agencies and community
- Participates in activities that promote the development of nursing practice within the program
Operational Management
- Develops, monitors, controls and evaluates budget in collaboration with Administrative Director of the Program
- Develops processes for selecting, evaluating and maintaining materials/equipment needed for enhancing patient care
- Promotes effective utilization of resources
- Develops and maintains interdepartmental relationships and participates in activities which contribute to the effective function of the unit and the corporation
- Promotes and maintains effective working relationships between programs and with corporate management
