The Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries is seeking an individual to join the Crop Sector Development Branch as an Integrated Pest Management Specialist - Entomologist, in Fredericton.
As a member of the Crop Sector Development Branch and reporting to the section manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating strategies, programs, policies, protocols and initiatives aimed at controlling agricultural commodity insect pests. This position is responsible for providing expert advisory services to producers, stakeholders, staff and departmental management, on insect management and honey bee related issues, including insect identification (diagnostics), to address constraints, and develop and promote sustainable growth of the agricultural industry. Responsibilities also include conducting industry surveys and developing and delivering educational and reference materials on insect management and other related topics, through presentations, newsletters, articles, fact sheets, selection guides, and website materials. This person is responsible for conducting and coordinating research and insect monitoring activities, keeping informed on new research, and evaluating and demonstrating new integrated pest management practices. Duties will include understanding and performing the role of the Provincial Apiarist in accordance with the Bee Act and General Regulation, and representing the department on various international, national, regional and provincial committees and associations, on issues relating to insect pests, honey bees and pollination, and research. This position will support various other departmental initiatives and perform other related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will possess the following:
- A Master's degree in Science with specialization in Agriculture and focus on integrated pest management, particularly in entomology and insect identification and management; and a minimum of eight (8) years of directly related work experience;
OR
- A Bachelor's degree in Science with specialization in Agriculture and focus on integrated pest management, particularly in entomology and insect identification and management; and a minimum of ten (10) years of directly related work experience.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Depending on the response to this competition, candidates with less than the required years of experience may be considered.
The successful candidate must be eligible for membership in the New Brunswick Institute of Agrologists, and membership must be attained within six (6) months of appointment.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate experience in one or more of the following: technology transfer; networking; field research trials for evaluation and demonstration; insect diagnostics; working with agricultural producers and producer groups. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be prepared to: travel within and outside of the province, including overnight stays, as required; work outside of the regular work hours, as required; work in agricultural environments which may include a variety of terrain and weather conditions; possess a valid class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent; and maintain a Pesticide Applicator Certificate.
SALARY: $72,772.44 to $99,606.52 per annum
