The Department of Justice and Public Safety is dedicated to the rule of law, the promotion of the public interest, and the impartial administration of justice and works to improve the safety, security and resiliency of communities and citizens.

The Department of Justice and Public Safety, Inspection and Enforcement New Brunswick, is seeking individuals to join the Safer Communities Section as Investigators working in various regions of the province. As a member of the Safer Communities Section, Investigators possess a general public safety mandate and are responsible for the enforcement of various provincial and federal legislations including the Criminal Code of Canada.

What you will do

The successful candidates will be responsible to conduct inspections and investigations under provincial and federal legislation including the Criminal Code of Canada. Investigators will also be mandated under the new Safer Communities programs which includes investigative responsibility over illegal or contraband commodities such as drugs, cannabis, tobacco and liquor. Some members of the Safer Communities Team will be seconded to the local police of jurisdiction's Integrated Enforcement Units, these units are joint enforcement operations comprised of municipal and regional police services, the RCMP and JPS peace officers. Their mission is to target low to mid level drug and firearm offences.

Other duties include: the investigation of complaints and the following up of leads to determine if violations under the acts are occurring; the presentation of evidence in court; participation in covert undercover and surveillance operations; the writing of search warrants; human source management; the education of licensees and the public; and armed response and operational support for other Branch sections and units.

The successful candidates will be responsible to liaise and participate in joint initiatives with other enforcement agencies and make presentations to various organizations in order to promote public awareness related to illegal activities and the harmful and adverse social and economic impacts on NB Communities.

Work environment

  • Required to do shift work
  • Work nights and weekends and respond to after-hours calls
  • Work alone with minimal supervision
  • Considerable travel throughout the province will be required

Who you are

You have the ability to:

  • carry and utilize control tactics tools including firearms
  • perform field work/investigations
  • carry out physically demanding tasks
  • work outside in inclement weather on all types of terrain
  • meet the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE) at the Cadet level if not currently, employed as a peace officer with the Government of New Brunswick or a person employed as a peace officer or a person employed with a law enforcement agency within the last three years.
  • Pass psychological testing (MMPI 2)

The successful candidates must successfully complete a Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) vulnerable sector reference check with fingerprints and an approved psychological suitability assessment as requested. For specific positions, the successful candidates must maintain current Department of Justice and Public Safety (JPS) sidearm and control tactics qualifications and must obtain and maintain a security clearance at the Secret level.

Need to have (essential skills and qualifications)

  • Successful graduation from an accredited police academy

OR

  • successful graduation from a law enforcement program with a minimum of eight (8) years' experience in an investigative or law enforcement environment
  • Candidates must possess a valid driver's license

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Some positions require written and spoken competence in French and English. Others will require written and spoken competence in English only. Please state your language capability.

Nice to Have (their asset qualifications)

  • Graduates from an accredited Police Science Program
  • Possess current Use of Force qualifications
  • Possess current sidearm and Control Tactics certification
  • Presently appointed as a Peace Officer under the Police Act of New Brunswick or similar legislative authority
  • Have work experience related to the investigation and prosecution of individuals suspected or found in violation of relevant legislations, including the prosecution of drug related offences.

Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

Wage

$2,616 - $3,168 Biweekly
