Not only is the department responsible for managing over 18,000 kilometers of provincial highways, it also manages the planning, design and construction of hospitals, schools and other government buildings.

The Construction Branch manages the Departmentâ??s highway and bridge construction program which includes oversight of paving, chip seal, culvert, and bridge contracts. The Branch is also responsible to maintain, develop and implement the various construction specifications, standards, testing procedures, and ensure consistency in their application.

What you will do

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is seeking an individual to join the Construction Branch as a regional bridge technician working in a flexible work location within the province of New Brunswick, preferably in Miramichi, Bathurst or Edmundston office, but reporting to Head Office in Fredericton.

As a member of the Structures team, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • providing technical expertise and guidance in all areas of the fabrication and construction of bridges and bridge components;
  • providing technical support for all aspects of on-site bridge construction and the fabrication of precast concrete girders, structural steel girders and precast concrete pipe and box culverts;
  • providing technical support for the quality control and assurance of concrete delivered to site;
  • providing technical guidance and support for inspection staff to ensure consistency and proper interpretation of structures plans and specifications.

Work will involve:

  • Travel throughout the province and some out of province travel may be required.
  • Working on job sites in all weather conditions.
  • Exposure to dust and fumes.
  • Lifting and carrying equipment and/or samples.
  • Walking over uneven or sloping terrain.
  • Working at heights with fall protection.
  • Working in confined spaces.

Essential Qualifications:

Engineering and Field Level VII:

  • Diploma from a recognized two (2) year Civil Engineering Technology program.
  • A minimum of six (6) years of related highway construction work experience, which includes forty-eight (48) months with a significant role in bridge construction or rehabilitation.
  • Must be a member, or be eligible for membership, in the New Brunswick Society of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists.
  • Must be comfortable working in a computerized environment and have experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid Class 5 driverâ??s license as issued by the Province of New Brunswick.

If there are no applicants with the above essential qualifications, we may consider applicants with the following qualifications and appoint at a lower classification.

Engineering and Field Level VI:

  • Diploma from a recognized two (2) year Civil Engineering Technology program.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of related highway construction work experience, which includes twenty-four (24) months with a significant role in bridge construction or rehabilitation.
  • Must be a member, or be eligible for membership, in the New Brunswick Society of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists.
  • Must be comfortable working in a computerized environment and have experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid Class 5 driverâ??s license as issued by the Province of New Brunswick.

Engineering and Field Level V:

  • Diploma from a recognized two (2) year Civil Engineering Technology program.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of related highway construction work experience, which includes twelve (12) months with a significant role in bridge construction or rehabilitation.
  • Must be a member, or be eligible for membership, in the New Brunswick Society of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists.
  • Must be comfortable working in a computerized environment and have experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid Class 5 driverâ??s license as issued by the Province of New Brunswick.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Written and spoken competence in English is required. Please state your language capability.

Asset Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate the following assets:

  • testing of concrete materials for quality assurance and quality control
  • survey layout and control for bridge structures
  • have knowledge of codes and standards applicable to the construction of bridge structures as well as precast concrete elements and structural steel (CSA, ASTM, AASHTO, CWB, etc.)
  • have industry experience in areas related to bridge construction and bridge component fabrication

Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

SALARY:

Engineering and Field level VII: $2,327.00 to $2,932.00 bi-weekly, based on a 36 ¼ hour work week.

Engineering and Field level VI: $2,126.00 to $2,671.00 bi-weekly, based on a 36 ¼ hour work week.

Engineering and Field level V: $1,935.00 to $2,434.00 bi-weekly, based on a 36 ¼ hour work week.
