About the Cancer Care Program
The Cancer Care Program has a provincial mandate to deliver cancer care to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. It operates the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre (DHBMCC) in St. John's, and regional cancer centres in Corner Brook, Gander and Grand Falls. The DHMBCC has four linear accelerators, an orthovoltage unit, an HDR Brachytherapy unit, two CT-Simulators, Eclipse Treatment Planning System and ARIA Radiation Oncology information system. The cancer centre in Corner Brook is a satellite site with one linear accelerator and one CT simulator and will be offering a full complement of radiation therapy techniques.
Job Summary
The Dosimetrist is responsible for:
- Performing highly specialized and clinical work as a member of the radiation oncology team in the development of treatment plans for oncology patients undergoing radiation therapy treatment, and in accordance with established policies and standards of practice.
- Clinical activities in the CT simulator, and radiation treatment units.
- Consulting with physicians regarding goals of treatment, including treatment volumes and organs at risk.
- Performing image registration/fusion.
- Contouring organs at risk for treatment and devising optimal radiation beam arrangements.
- Organizing workload and coordinating resources in the department to ensure all aspects of a patient's radiation treatment plan are completed prior to treatment.
- Performing quality assurance checks of the Electronic Medical Record by following established policies and procedures, maintaining records of check, and taking appropriate action when necessary.
- Performing quality assurance checks of treatment plans created by non-certified Dosimetrists.
- Consulting with Radiation Therapists, Medical Physicists and Radiation Oncologists on optimal treatment parameters.
- Facilitating weekly Planning Quality Assurance Rounds and Radiation Oncologist Peer Reviews.
- Providing support, teaching and technical advice to non-certified Dosimetrists, Radiation Therapists and Students.
- Working in mould room fabricating patient specific radiation therapy accessories such as custom beam modifying devices.
Dosimetrists report to the Provincial Manager of Medical Physics.
At the Corner Brook location, Dosimetrists may be required to perform all radiation therapist duties including CT simulator and/or the radiation treatment unit.

Job Qualifications
Graduation from an approved/accredited degree/diploma in Radiation Therapy is required.
Current and continuing certification with the Canadian Association for Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) in Radiation Therapy is required.
Successful completion of the CAMRT Dosimetry Certificate (CDC) OR current and continuing registration as a Certified Medical Dosimetrist (CMD) with the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board (MDCB) is required.
A minimum of three years' experience within the last five years working in Radiation Therapy or Dosimetry is required.
In-depth knowledge of treatment planning and the physical principles of dose calculation.
Comprehensive knowledge of departmental, organizational, and professional standards.
