Pictou County Palliative Care Society (PCPCares) (non-profit)

PCPCares enables compassionate non-medical care of those living with a life-threatening illness for which no cure is available. We assist individuals being cared for in their homes. Our support emphasizes quality of life and offers relief from the isolation associated with living with a life-threatening illness.

The Opportunity

Do you want to make a difference in the lives of families across Pictou County?

PCPCares is developing a new Volunteer Visiting Program that will place trained volunteers into patients' homes to provide non-medical emotional and respite support. This is a new initiative for Pictou County. We are breaking new ground!

We are hopeful this project will evolve into a permanent full-time opportunity for the successful candidate.

What you will do:

  • Develop, implement and evaluate a palliative volunteer visiting program that supports needs of the patient, family and caregivers.
  • Recommend to PCPCares Board policies and procedures for the Volunteer Visiting Program in collaboration with NS Health Palliative Care Navigator, Community Palliative Care Services, Continuing Care and VON.
  • Recruit and coordinate the training of non-medical volunteers to the program.
  • Conduct assessments for the palliative care patient, family and caregivers when volunteers are requested.
  • Establish effective communication with patients, family, caregivers, Palliative Care Team, Continuing Care and VON.
  • Provide adequate education, supervision, and feedback for visiting volunteers.
  • Collect data and analyzes budget to support and sustain regular and ongoing evaluation of the program.
  • Ensure support and recognition of volunteers.

Your Key Skills

  • Experience with program development and implementation.
  • Experience supervising staff or volunteers is essential.
  • Experience developing and managing staff/volunteer schedules.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills and efficient management of time and work.
  • Skilled as an experienced adult educator/facilitator.
  • Competency in computer-based programs
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member and ability to foster collaborative relationships
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - developing and maintaining good interpersonal relations through diplomacy and respect for others is essential. (High level empathy and compassion)
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement.

Your Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Current and clear criminal record and vulnerable sector check. Valid Drivers Licence
  • Experience with Palliative Care or a background in caregiving or peer support is highly desirable and beneficial
  • Certification - Volunteer Management Professionals of Canada would be an asset

Day to Day Expectations:

  • Must be willing to work flexible hours when necessary (days, evenings and occasional weekends) to meet operational needs.
  • Willing to sign a confidentiality agreement and comply with rules of confidentiality in accordance with PCPCares requirements.
  • Some local travel is required.
  • Able to work from home office
