NL Health Services has Hospitalist/Family Medicine locum opportunities available at the Carbonear General Hospital. The hospital provides services to a catchment area of approximately 50,000 people.

The hospital has 70 acute care beds with a 6 bed ICU. Specialty services include; Anesthesia, General Surgery, Obstetrical/Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Family Medicine (Hospitalist) and 24-hour Emergency coverage. Further supportive services include, 24-hour diagnostic imaging and laboratory services, physiotherapy, respiratory therapy, Chemotherapy, Pharmacy, Dialysis, ICU/Cardiac and Palliative Care. There are visiting services for ophthalmology and urology.

Community

Carbonear General Hospital is situated in the town of Carbonear. Carbonear is a beautiful rural town about 100 kilometers outside of St. John's. The Hospital services around 50,000 people in the Rural Avalon Region. There are many amenities in the area, such as hiking, a swimming pool, soccer pitch and biking/walking trails, restaurants, local theatre and shopping.

Job Summary

The successful candidate will be expected to share 24 hour on-call services and general practice clinics shared with the other Hospitalists. Previous experience in chemotherapy assessments would be an asset but not required. While there is support from Internal Medicine and Surgical services, the successful candidate will be adept at independent management of patients with multiple co-morbidities. Strong value is placed on communication skills with patients and families.

  • Medical Degree

  • Satisfy credential and privilege requirements of NL Health Services including a satisfactory criminal record check and vulnerable sector check

Remuneration

Remuneration is in accordance with the Medical Care Plan (MCP) guidelines. The daily locum rate is $1090 for every 24-hour period worked and pro-rated for less than 24 hours.

There is a daily meal allowance of $52.44 per day for each day worked (up to 14 days). If travelling in a personal vehicle, a mileage rate determined by the provincial government is paid. A vehicle rental can be approved upon request and the gas receipts will be reimbursed (no mileage will be paid). If traveling to the province, the most economical airline flights will be approved, along with the rental of a mid-size car. Gas receipts will be reimbursed. A hotel room can be provided upon arrival in NL, if required.

Locums not working full time elsewhere in NL can be reimbursed for some CPSNL and CMPA related costs.
