Definition of Work:
The Mental Health Crisis Intervener (Peer Support Specialist) is an individual who identifies as a person with a mental illness and is an integral member of the Flexible Assertive Community Treatment Team (FACT). The team provides intensive mobile services to individuals with severe and persistent mental illness and concurrent related complexities of mental health issues/disorders. In partnership with team members and the client the position is responsible for providing peer support to individuals to reach their recovery goals. The Peer Support Specialist provides emotional and social support to others who share a common experience. The incumbent will provide strategies to help individuals cope with stressful symptoms of illness and work towards their recovery. The Peer Support Specialist will consult and work in partnership with CHANNAL, local employers, service providers and other community agencies in the provision of service to clients of the FACT team. The successful candidate must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for promoting and supporting person-and family-centred care, demonstrate a commitment to safety and partner with all team members to improve worker and patient safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks and implementing improvements.

Duties:
• Coordinates support and outreach activities with a wide range of individuals, groups, organizations and communities.
• Prepares and delivers presentations, educational activities and group activities.
• Travel throughout the region is required.
• Evening and weekend work is required.
• And, other related duties as required.

Required qualifications:
• Identify as a person with a mental illness and willingness to share that experience in this peer support role to support clients and families.
• Undergraduate degree in the area of Social Sciences.
• Demonstrated experience in providing community based mental health services and a minimum 1 year in the last five years' experience with adults diagnosed and living with mental illness and/or addiction concerns.
• Proven knowledge of mental illness and addiction from bio-psychosocial perspectives, holistic and community approaches.
• Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of independence and autonomy while collaborating with an interdisciplinary team.
• Demonstrated knowledge of mental health and addictions programs, services and community resources.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.
• Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to utilize a range of technologies.
• Use of a private vehicle and valid driver's license are a condition of employment.
• Satisfactory Child, Youth and Family Services Records Check.
• Consistent demonstration of NL Health Services core values: Innovation, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence (I CARE).
• A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required for this position.
• A satisfactory certificate of conduct from the RCMP or local police authority.

Preferred qualifications:
• Demonstrated experience working with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities in a Mental Health and Addictions setting.
