JOB PURPOSE
The Cancer Registrar identifies, codes and stages reportable cancers and tumors by applying rules and entering relevant data into a cancer registry information system. Duties include reviewing client files to determine if sufficient information exists in order to code; consulting pathology, imaging, laboratory reports, physicians and other health care professionals to clarify information pertinent to cancer type, site, stage and treatment; verifying demographic information of patients; applying applicable coding rules and conducting system edits to ensure data quality. The Cancer Registrar is responsible for ensuring complete, accurate and timely cancer information for use by various healthcare agencies. Other duties may include processing mail, scanning and responding to requests for historical information on patients from Oncology Centres. Employees of this classification may be required to provide training and orientation to other personnel, students and healthcare professionals.
N.B. These duties are only the basic and prime duties of the job; related and allied duties may be assigned as necessary to the operation of the service.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma, supplemented by a Health Information Management diploma, course work in medical terminology and/or anatomy and physiology, and a minimum of three (3) years related experience or a high school diploma supplemented by a 2 year diploma in a recognized allied health field, course work in medical terminology and/or anatomy and physiology and a minimum of three (3) years related experience.
- Successful completion of a recognized two (2) year program in a health care field, or successful completion of a Canadian Health Information Management Association recognized Health Information Management program and awaiting certification as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) by the National Cancer Registrar's Association's Council on Certification.
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
- Preference may be given to candidates that possess the following asset qualification:
- Certification as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) or eligibility for a CTS certificate.
- Ability to attend work on a regular basis.
- Ability to perform the duties of the position.
- Good work record.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Reporting to the Supervisor of the New Brunswick Cancer Registry, the successful candidate will be a member of a multidisciplinary team, responsible for gathering and investigating the extent of disease information to accurately and timely code tumors and assign stage in a cancer information system.
- Other duties may include, but are not limited to, processing mail, filing, learning standards of coding and keeping current as standards evolve.
