Demands, duties, qualifications
Job Summary
Meals are prepared on a large scale in an institutional kitchen. Duties include cooking and baking a variety of foods in preparation of meals for residents; determining quantity of food to be prepared; estimating raw ingredients needed and planning cooking and baking schedules for timeliness; packaging, labeling and storing pre-cooked foods in accordance with strict guidelines for minimizing risk of contamination; preparing special diet meals for residents; preparing and serving food to residents and for special catered functions within the organization; participating in sanitary and security procedures; training cooking staff, supervising and assigning duties to kitchen staff. Ensures WHIMIS and food safety regulations are followed. Performs other related work as required.

Lifting or moving large pans weighing between 10 to 25 lbs., occurs regularly and occasionally lifting or moving objects weighing over 50 lbs.
Constantly stands while preparing, cooking and serving food. Walking to various work stations and pushing/pulling food trolleys is also required.
Work is often performed in awkward or cramped spaces and requires bending and kneeling.
Alertness and concentration are required when performing repetitive tasks such as operating equipment with sharp blades; working with knives.

Job Qualifications
Graduation from an approved cook's training course.
Journeyperson's Cook Interprovincial (Red Seal) Certificate.
Experience in cooking in a large scale commercial or an institutional operation would be an asset.
Knowledge of basic food safety and sanitation would be an asset.
Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate effectively.
A satisfactory record of work performance is required.
