We are currently looking to fill the position of Science Technician I, Engineering to join our Engineering department in the Faculty of Science.

Job Information and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Division Director, the Science Technician I, Engineering:

  • Maintains lab equipment; assesses functionality, carries out minor repairs and determines when equipment needs to be professionally repaired
  • Maintains the student laboratory manuals for each laboratory course and collaborates with faculty to continually amend/update/improve from year to year
  • Coordinates equipment and computer lending for student use
  • Instructs students and lab demonstrators on safety and emergency procedures when using lab tools and equipment and ensures lab users adhere to safety policies and procedures
  • Maintains all safety-related records, including results of safety tests and Incident Reports
  • Carries out equipment and material acquisition under the supervision of individual faculty members
  • Provide assistance in preparation and use of the Engineering demonstrations for outreach activities (including on-and off-site, high school presentations and workshops, university open house events, and other community presentations)

Experience and Education Requirements

To be the successful Science Technician I, Engineering you will have:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (B.Eng.) (Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics or related fields); higher degrees and equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
  • Minimum of 2 years related experience in an engineering laboratory environment
  • Experience working with power and hand tools
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written), interpersonal, organizational and time management skills; accuracy and attention to detail
  • Programming Experience
  • Computer proficiency with CAD modelling
  • Experience in safety procedures and be familiar with Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations an asset
  • Experience with electronics and robotics an asset
