Enhanced LPN Orientation Program with Northwood

Job Type: Permanent Full-Time

Job Description:

A New Pathway for Internationally Educated Nurses to Become Licensed Practical Nurses at Northwood

"It's not just about the care we provide, but also the conversation we have while doing it."

Northwood began in 1962 as a social movement in response to the plight of seniors living alone in Halifax. What emerged was a shared belief that people, committed to an ideal, could make a difference in the world. Since its inception, Northwood has become a powerful voice for seniors in Nova Scotia, demanding a new approach to aging in place.

Today, we are the largest not-for-profit continuing care organization in Atlantic Canada. We are not just a long-term care facility; we provide homes for our residents and make them feel comfortable and respected. Our focus is on People, not profit margins.

Program Overview: The Northwood Enhanced LPN Program is an innovative and supportive initiative aimed at helping internationally educated nurses transition seamlessly into nursing roles within our organization. Northwood is collaborating with GEM Health Care Group in this initiative to support 6 of 12 participants in a six-week program where learners will participate in an in-person, comprehensive refresher course, focusing on the essential knowledge and clinical skills needed to provide safe, competent care for the elderly in long-term care settings.

The course begins on December 2, 2024, and is a paid, six-week onboarding orientation.

Qualifications :

  • Internationally educated nurse
  • Holder of a valid Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN) conditional RN license and the ability to obtain a NSCN Licensed Practical Nurse license by the first day of the orientation
  • Those who hold a conditional LPN license will also be considered
  • Citizen, Permanent Resident of Canada or holder of an open work permit
  • Experience as an RN within the last five years.
  • Valid CPR and First Aid certification within the last year.
  • Clear criminal and vulnerable sector check within the past three months.
  • Previous experience working with the elderly in long-term care.
  • Reside within 30 minutes of the hiring facility.

Successful candidates will be required to commit to a two-year return of service agreement with Northwood, where they will have the opportunity to grow their career and contribute to the high standard of care provided to residents. This commitment ensures a stable transition into the workforce while fostering long-term professional development within a supportive, collaborative environment.
