Demands, duties, qualifications
The Laboratory Technologist II B (Specialized Tests) performs specialized procedures/tests and provides administration or technical direction, instruction, and guidance to laboratory technologists. Work involves troubleshooting processes, equipment operations, quality control activities, inventory management, and/or performing specialized test/procedures for a laboratory.
The main responsibility of the Laboratory Technologist II B in Microbiology is providing lead direction in the Microbiology Department. Work involves assisting senior technologists and management in ensuring efficient operation of the Department. The Laboratory Technologist II will have extensive knowledge in Microbiology. This position reports to the Lead Laboratory Technologist III and the Zone Laboratory Operations Manager.
Qualifications:
- Graduation from a recognized (accredited) program with a diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology;
- Must be a registered Medical Laboratory Technologist with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS);
- Must be registered with the Newfoundland and Labrador Council of Health Professionals (NLCHP);
- A minimum of two years' experience, within the past four years, working in Microbiology is required;
- Successful completion of an approved/recognized Quality Control Certificate/Program/Course is required, or willing to obtain in a timeframe deemed acceptable by the employer;
- The successful applicant will be required to submit a satisfactory Certificate of Conduct.
Duties
: (Included but not limited to)
- Provide guidance to Physicians, Nurses, Laboratory Technologists, Laboratory Assistants and other healthcare professionals on Microbiology procedures and practices;
- Responsible for overseeing the maintenance and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment;
- Responsible for inventory management of the Microbiology Department;
- Monitor Quality Control and Assurance on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, including monthly reports;
- Lead and participate in validation of new equipment and processes;
- Participate and investigate non-conformances from external quality assurance programs (IQMH & CAP);
- Provides orientation, instruction and supervision to Laboratory Technologists, Laboratory Assistants, Medical Laboratory Technology students and new staff in the Microbiology department;
- Assists in the updating of existing and creation of new SOP's as required for the Microbiology department;
- Work and collaborate with the Microbiologist team at PHML;
- Perform other related duties as required.
