WHO WE ARE

Eastern Charlotte Waterways (ECW) is an environmental not-for-profit research organization based in Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick. ECW's purpose is to protect the environment and its biodiversity for the benefit of the public by providing knowledge, skills, and expertise to empower persons, partners, and communities. We conduct research, community planning, and projects on environmental sustainability issues including watershed management, coastal management, environmental monitoring, renewable energy, energy conservation and efficiency, green transportation, sustainable food systems, waste reduction, climate change adaptation, and sustainable community planning.

The Chapman Group is happy to support recruiting a dynamic and experienced Executive Director who will champion its mission. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for providing strategic oversight on all aspects of the organization including day-to-day operations of ECW, project development, funding procurement, staff management, and external affairs of all ECW projects, assets, and core objectives.

Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate to create and implement strategic plans that align with the organization's growth and core values. Maintain and identify key assets, projects, and partnerships. Stay informed about trends and financial opportunities that could impact organizational structure and success.
  • Governance and Board Relations: Support the Board Chair in ensuring operational integrity and alignment with the strategic vision. Organize bi-monthly board meetings and semi-regular committee meetings as per the board calendar.
  • Human Resources Management: Regularly meet with the management team to assess equipment, budget, and project needs. Oversee senior staff recruitment, conduct annual performance reviews, and ensure appropriate staff training.
  • Financial and Administrative Management: Develop and manage the annual budget, track revenue and expenses, and assist with funding oversight. Handle contracts with external contractors and stakeholders, review payroll deposits, and negotiate multi-year contracts.
  • External Relations and Stakeholder Engagement: Represent the organization at external committees, public events, and media engagements. Build strong relationships with government agencies and stakeholders, address environmental concerns, and manage public relations.
  • Project Management Oversight: Oversee project reports, maintain accurate records, and guide project development with management staff.
  • Operational and Asset Management: Purchase and maintain assets needed for operations and collaborate with management staff on asset development and maintenance.
Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline, or equivalent academic and practical experience in environmental or sustainability fields.
  • Candidates with a business or management background may be considered if they meet other essential qualifications.
  • Post-graduate experience, especially in Environmental Management or Sustainability, is an asset.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5 or more years of progressive management experience, nonprofit and/or volunteer sector experience is an asset
  • A passion for environmental sustainability and enthusiasm for public engagement on environmental issues
  • Strong strategic, innovative, and growth mindset
  • Proven ability to manage, lead and develop a high-performing team
  • A persuasive and passionate communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working with multi-stakeholder groups, Indigenous communities or government, and across Canadian governments
  • Strong leadership skills, with a proven track record of managing teams, and the ability to motivate others
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask
  • Proficient in Microsoft software - Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

COMPENSATION

The salary range for this role is between $60,000 - $90,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis until a suitable candidate is found.
