The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Cost Optimization Engineer to join our Central Engineering team in St. John's

This is a permanent hybrid position, working on a Monday to Friday schedule working primarily from the St. John's Office

As a Cost Optimization Engineer, you will be accountable for driving engineering cost reduction and optimization initiatives across integrated mining and processing operations, from pit to port.

Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Perform detailed cost-benefit analysis on proposed improvements and optimization projects, leveraging internal systems like SAP and Power BI.
  • Develop implement and analyze cost-saving initiatives in collaboration with the engineering & reliability, operations, and procurement teams, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Lead engineering cost optimization projects, ensuring timely and budget-compliant execution in line with Vale engineering standards.
  • Monitor design change requests related to project scope, budget, or schedule adjustments as necessary.
  • Track and report project progress using tools like Power BI and Power Automate, maintaining up-to-date records of key performance indicators (KPIs) for cost optimization.
  • Conduct audits and assessments on ongoing projects to evaluate performance against cost-saving targets and identify further opportunities for process improvement.
  • Coordinate site inspections and audits to ensure that construction and project execution are in line with design specifications and regulatory codes.
  • Present cost optimization outcomes and project progress to senior management, outlining challenges and future opportunities for savings.

About You

Education:

  • Undergraduate Degree
  • Registered P.Eng

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 year Experience

Skills:

  • Self driven and passionate about business analysis and results
  • Engineering economics proficiency to performing advanced cost-benefit analysis
  • Strong analytical, planning, organizational and time management skills.
  • Capable of leading cost optimization projects, ensuring timely delivery within budget and compliance with standards.
  • Focused on driving tangible process improvements using methodologies to enhance efficiency (Lean, Six Sigma).
  • Strong in presenting optimization results to management and tracking project KPIs with tools like Power B, Power Automate and Power Apps.
