Demands, duties, qualifications
Job Summary
This position works within the Nurse Practitioner's (NP) scope of practice in the following category of practice: Family/All Ages or adult. The successful candidate would be responsible for the Pre and Post operative care of the frail elderly and other adult orthopedic patients at St. Clares. This would involve geriatric care of the majority of admitted hip fractures as well as the frail elderly undergoing restorative surgery. Duties would include medication reviews on admission, liaising with the geriatrics team (including performing geriatric assessments), post op management with the goal of avoiding delirium and other post op complications, and assisting in the transition to discharge. Several studies involving this patient group will be carried out with the support of both the orthopedics and geriatrics teams with this position being an integral part of data collection and analysis. Candidates will be required to interact in a team environment including nursing, social work, physiotherapy, medicine, Residents/clinical clerks etc. Main duties will be floor based but will involve emergency and clinic assessments as required.

Hours will be determined to coincide with the residency rounding schedules to ensure continuity of care.

Job Demands

Constantly moves, lifts, or operates equipment/machinery up to 10 lbs. and regularly is required to lift/move equipment, books, and supplies. Occasionally, may have to reposition a patient over 50 lbs.
Physical effort also includes regular sitting to conduct patient histories, performing work on the computer and when assessing patients, regularly stands or walks.
When performing procedures, regularly uses fine finger/precision work and hand tools (i.e. medical instruments, computer mouse, stethoscope, dopplers, etc.) requiring accurate control and steadiness.
Visual concentration is required when performing physical assessment and procedures, completing charts/reports, observing patients, reading equipment/monitors, and completing work-related correspondence on the computer.

Job Qualifications
Completion of an approved/recognized Nurse Practitioner program is required.
Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (or eligible for licensure) as a Nurse Practitioner (Family/All Ages or Adult) with the CRNNL.
A minimum of five (5) years clinical nursing experience in the last seven (7) years in adult acute care surgical services is required.
Current BCLS Certification is required.
Possessed strong abilities in the areas of collaboration, clinical reasoning, professional development, interpersonal effectiveness, conflict management and teamwork.
Demonstrated progressive clinical leadership skills.
Possessed strong communication, problem solving, decision-making, and teaching skills.
Demonstrated ability to function autonomously in an advanced practice role.
Support and participate in research to improve practice and client outcomes.
Demonstrated skills in computer and database management skills.
A satisfactory record of work performance is required.

Any additional training in the care of the geriatric patient would be of benefit but is not required. Additional education with the geriatrics team will be provided for the initial 4-6 weeks.
