Our long-term Asset management Plan includes an ambitious capital program to rebuild, renew and replace portions of our installed asset base.

We currently have a permanent position opening in the Project Execution Department for an experienced Protection & Controls Engineer. You will bring experience in protection and control systems to the team and contribute fully in the project outcomes. You work equally well as a technical member of the team or guiding other members. Your technical skills and experience combined with excellent oral and written communication skills, and project management skills, will allow you to make significant contributions to the project deliverables.

Responsibilities:

You will join a multi-discipline team working in a matrix organization to design and implement modern protection and control systems. This position supports non-regulated project execution activities and includes the following responsibilities:

  • Preparation of protection system designs;
  • Preparation of protective relay settings;
  • Preparation of control system designs;
  • DCS/PLC system design;
  • Network architecture design;
  • Selection and procurement of instrumentation;
  • Power system analysis as it relates to relay performance;
  • Ability to assess new technologies and determine the correct solution for protection and control issues;
  • Contract and contractor management, including engineering consultants;
  • Tendering and contract administration including commissioning and preparing project closing documentation;
  • Preparation of project cost estimates, schedules and resource requirements;
  • Projects will be primarily based in Menihek and Churchill Falls generating stations. Projects at other NL Hydro assets may also be required in the future, depending upon operational needs. This could include work at Muskrat Falls, Forteau, Shoal Coal and Soldiers Pond.

Job Requirements:

In this position, you will need to bring the following:

  • Bachelor of Engineering Degree (Electrical) with a minimum of 5 years experience since graduation;
  • Member in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL);
  • Experience in the configuration and programming of PLCs and DCS;
  • Experience in network architecture design;
  • Experience in preparing and using logic and wiring diagrams;
  • Experience in supervising equipment installation and commissioning;
  • Relevant experience in complex, multi-discipline projects;
  • Experience in selecting, setting and troubleshooting protective relays;
  • A working knowledge of communication protocols;
  • Proven and demonstrated communication skills;
  • Ability to thrive as a participant and/or leader within a multi-discipline team of both internal and external resources;
  • Relevant experience in the design, implementation and troubleshooting of protection and or control systems in general with emphasis on hydro generation plants or electrical transmission systems or equivalent;
  • Experience in design, managing construction contracts and commissioning;
  • Experience in preparing project estimates;
  • Project management experience or certification;
  • Experience working with MS Office.
