Resource Planning Engineer

Working as a Resource Planning Engineer with our Resource and Production Planning team, you will be focused on the sustainable, reliable, and economic management of Hydro's resources.

In this role you will:

  • Prepare analysis to support Hydro's IRP (Integrated Resource Planning) process, including:
  • Analyze the Island and Labrador Interconnected Systems to determine when power and energy deficits occur by evaluating Hydro's planning assumptions against established criteria.
  • Prepare generation expansion plans to satisfy criteria, while meeting environmental requirements.
  • Use planning software, specifically Plexos, to evaluate system reliability, generation costs and export opportunities.
  • Maintain and update system assumptions relating to the existing system and expansion options including capital costs, outage rates, load profiles, transmission constraints and economic projections.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports for the Public Utilities Board, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and for internal use.
  • Participate in the regulatory process as required including preparing reports, attending hearings and technical conferences and responding to requests for information.
  • Maintain current knowledge of Hydro's existing generation, and transmission systems and developments or trends in generation, demand management and utility planning.
  • Provide technical assistance to Operations and Engineering personnel such as recommendations for system operation, equipment sizing and generation assumptions.
  • Provide assessments of system reliability annually as part of the Near Term Generation Adequacy report and as required to support other analysis.
  • Produce long-term projections of system generation to support long term planning and budgeting and to support commercial decisions.
  • Be aware of the Hydro Group's environmental policy and guiding principles, and Corporate objectives, targets and programs.
  • Participate in the Corporate Safety and Health Program involving: safety and health promotion; safety meetings; accident/incident investigations; and emergency preparedness.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

You have a degree in Engineering from an accredited university program. Five years of experience preferred. You are eligible for membership in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL). Requires knowledge of generation planning fundamentals and software. Specific experience with Plexos and general analysis software (Excel, Python, VBA, etc.) would be an asset. Working knowledge of modeling and analysis of power systems would be an asset.
