The primary purpose of Student Affairs & Services (SAS) is to support students in achieving their academic, personal, and life goals. YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to Vice-Provost Learning & Student Experience, the Associate Vice-Provost for Student Affairs and Services (AVP) works closely with other members of the senior leadership team, providing strategic leadership and overall direction to the development and delivery of a range of student affairs programs, services and resources that enhance the student experience, including residence and housing, student access, inclusion, academic support, engagement, health and wellness, and student life both in and out of the classroom. The AVP has leadership and oversight of the Portfolio of Student Affairs and Services comprising more than 150 staff across multiple units, an operational budget exceeding $5 million.

Key Responsibilities

Executive Strategic Leadership:

  • Leads, inspires, and motivates a senior leadership team of student affairs professionals, aligning plans and priorities with those of the institution, to ensure the University's long-term success while maintaining an exceptional student experience.
  • Actively participates as a member of the University's senior leadership, helping to shape, establish and implement the strategic direction for the University and how it relates to students.
  • Takes a pro-active and team leadership role in collaborative problem solving on significant challenges for the University generally and SAS specifically.
  • Ensures the SAS portfolio is a leader and contributor to university-wide strategic planning and strategic enrollment management, particularly related to persistence and retention planning.
  • Champions and promotes the institutional values of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility within student services and across the University community.
  • Fosters and supports a culture of equity and belonging that welcomes, values and embraces diverse backgrounds, identities, ideas, perspectives, and ways of knowing and being.
  • Works collaboratively with the Provost and Vice-Provost, Vice-Presidents, AVP Ancillary Services and others providing senior level support and leadership with a focus on enhancing the student experience both inside and outside of the classroom and to support a university-wide integrated and strategic approach to strategic enrollment planning and management.

Developing Student Life and Culture:

  • Directs, creates, and partners with UNB's communities and campus leaders to ensure an exceptional student experience.

Communication Leadership:

  • Creates and communicates a compelling vision and sense of core purpose for the Student Services portfolio aligned with UNB's strategic priorities.
  • Proactively identifies issues and concerns, and effectively addresses issues as they arise and takes accountability as a key spokesperson for issues impacting student life and success.

Administrative Planning and Operations:

  • Works with the Student Affairs and Services leadership team (Senior Directors, Strategic Advisor and Executive Assistant/Project Manager) and other senior operational leaders to plan, develop and implement objectives and processes to maintain an exceptional student experience.
  • Initiates and oversees research, data collection and analysis, and communication of results that have an impact on the quality of the student experience, institutional reporting, etc.

Internal and external Stakeholder Relations:

  • Works closely with the Provost, Vice-Provosts, Vice-Presidents, Registrars, and Deans to support a university-wide integrated and strategic approach to strategic enrollment planning and management.
  • Establishes relationships, negotiates and stewards agreements with student government concerning culture, policies, and procedures, services, etc.
  • Engages in proactive and regular relationship building and stewardship with alumni, prospective donors, and friends of the university to build support and momentum for the University's excellence and reputation in support of student success.

Financial Leadership:

  • Oversees the development of a budget and financial plan for the administration of student services that meets current and emerging student needs and conforms to university practices.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Master's degree in a relevant field and progressive responsibility in Post-Secondary Education, preferably in Student Services.
  • Minimum of 10 years experience in Student Services or related field.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current best practices in student affairs.
  • Ability to work within a culturally and demographically diverse campus community.
  • Understanding of student affairs research and practice, and the ability to conduct relevant research and assessment.
  • Development and implementation of student/client-centric programming and services resulting in measurable and sustained student retention and satisfaction an asset.
  • Must be a strong communicator, encourage leadership development and continuity.
