The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Power Systems Operator to join our Power Department in Sudbury.
This is a permanent position covered under the Collective Agreement between Vale and the Local 2020-05 United Steelworkers.
The role of a Power Systems Operator is critical to the operation of Vale's High Voltage Power Distribution System and the Power Generating Plants.
In this position you will:
- Follow Safety and Risk Management Plan developed for department.
- Follow company standards and government regulations in the operation of the Vale High Voltage Power Distribution System and Generating Plants.
- Follow High Tension Switching Procedures thereby providing a safe working environment for workers
- Coordinate all outages with operating plants before and during planned maintenance.
- Liaise with the IESO and Hydro One for operations and planned outages.
- Analyze power outages and following company standards and established protocols, restore power to the affected areas as soon as it is safe to do so.
- Follow established procedures and protocols in an effort to maximize the value of generation and reduce the cost of purchased power, e.g., in the event of peak power situation.
- Work collaterally with members of his/her work group and cross functionally with all other
About You
Education: Graduate of Electrical Engineering Technologist or equivalent.
Experience: Minimum of three years of relevant experience is preferred.
Skills:
- Analytical: Ability to read and understand electrical prints and drawings.
- Processes: Thorough knowledge of High Voltage Power Distribution and Generating Systems.
- Specific Computer Skills: Proficiency with SCADA and DCS equipment. Working knowledge of SAP and Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Ability to react quickly and competently to changing operating conditions and arrive at solutions to overcome barriers in designing and implementing new and improved systems.
- Innovation/creativity on an ongoing basis to assist in modifying or restructuring operating procedures or to develop more effective methods or techniques.
- Ability to perform the work assigned with minimal supervision, with only unusual problems being referred to the supervisor.
