Scotia Investments Limited, located in Bedford, NS, is seeking a Director Taxation and Risk Management to join their team. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director Taxation and Risk Management will be part of the organization's finance leadership team, and an integral part of the services provided to the Scotia Family of Companies.
As a strong subject matter expert skilled in collaboration, this role will ensure the group's regulatory strength in tax compliance and planning activities; preparation and filing of tax returns; and effective risk management across taxation, audit and treasury - all to ensure timely and accurate procedures, controls, and relevant financial reporting.
Responsibilities will include:
- Evaluate compliance with established policies, procedures, standards and internal controls by leading the testing of operational control activities.
- Taking a risk-based approach, plan, manage, execute, and report on operational and financial audits.
- Proactively monitor and identify organizational changes that could impact the control environment (e.g., changes to businesses, systems, regulations, etc.) and work with leadership to identify associated impact and continuity of controls.
- Preparation of annual corporate tax plan for the group of companies, intercorporate dividend planning, debt loop planning and execution, and instalment payment calculations.
- Preparation of required CRA filings, and review of related assessments including family trusts, partnerships, companies with US sales, and estate freeze companies.
- Prepare or review corporate tax returns, related files, year-end financial statements for Annual General Meeting for operating/investment companies and estate freeze companies.
- Coordinate year-end audits of operating companies and collect information to prepare T2s and Financial Statements for all companies in the Scotia Investments Group.
- Ensure all items are filed as per CRA and IRS deadlines.
- Manage treasury operations, including cash management, FX Purchasing, financing and short-term investments.
- Provide resources and guidance to colleagues across the Scotia Investments Family of Companies in the areas of finance, banking, accounting, HST/GST and corporate income tax.
- Other related duties as required.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- CPA designation.
- Post-Secondary degree in a related field.
- In-depth tax education from CPA Canada, equivalent training, or willingness to complete the program.
- Exceptional corporate income tax and financial/accounting/reporting knowledge
- Strong digital acumen.
- Experience working with family-owned businesses in a highly professional environment.
