Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in a Safety Coordination or Management role.
  • A suitable combination of formal education and experience may be considered.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and better practices.
  • Certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) would be considered an asset.
  • Significant experience in writing policies and procedures.

We are seeking a dedicated Corporate Safety Officer to oversee our organizational safety initiatives and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations. Join our team and play a crucial role in promoting a culture of safety within the organization.

Reporting to the Manager of Human Resources, the incumbent will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety policies and programs to ensure a safe and healthy working environment. This role requires a proactive approach to risk management, compliance with regulatory requirements, and a commitment to fostering a culture of psychological and physical safety throughout the organization. The successful applicant must exercise a high level of professionalism, considerable tact, judgement, and initiative.

What You'll Do:

  • Develop, implement, review, and improve policies, processes, and procedures related to Health and Safety.
  • Review, investigate and maintain accurate records and analyze all workplace accident, incident, and near-miss reports, following up as necessary, while recognizing trends and providing reports to senior leadership.
  • Attend Joint Health and Safety meetings throughout the organization.
  • Coordinate and maintain safety training programs.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of City facilities and operations.
  • Ensure that staff have adequate training in emergency procedures and safe work practices.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of local, provincial, and federal workplace health and safety regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with the NB Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations along with City of Fredericton safety standards.
  • Liaise with WorkSafeNB and other outside consultants or agencies.
  • Promote a culture of safety and provide recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What You Bring:

  • Thorough knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and better practices.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency in Microsoft Suite.
  • Proven leadership and the ability to make prompt and effective decisions during emergencies and critical situations. Take charge during serious incidents, leading the response and ensuring effective management.
  • Perform regular safety audits and inspections to identify and reduce hazards and risk to the organization.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written to clearly convey safety policies, procedures, and expectations to all levels of the organization.
  • Maintain composure and ability to stay focused under pressure, especially during emergencies.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, other departments, and outside agencies.
  • Ability to remain objective and demonstrate good independent decision-making skills in challenging scenarios.
  • Identification of issues or problems and develop strategies, ideas, and opportunities for resolving them.
