JOB PURPOSE

The Charge Nurse is a clinical leader, resource, mentor, and facilitator. Under the direction of the Nurse Manager, the charge nurse is responsible for planning, providing, coordinating, directing and evaluating patient-centered care and nursing activities as required to meet organizational goals within Ambulatory Care.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently registered with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick.
  • Bachelor of Nursing Degree
  • BLS/CPR certification
  • Formal leadership training, conflict management and mentor skills would be an asset
  • Proven leadership qualities as demonstrated by initiative, good judgment and the ability to instill confidence in peers.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years recent Ambulatory Care/ Med / Surgery experience.
  • Must have a minimum 3 years recent charge nurse/ resource nurse experience
  • Experience in implementing quality improvement initiatives that mitigate patient risk
  • Experience in case management and a multidisciplinary approach to patient care experience.
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask in a fast-paced high-volume clinic setting
  • Ability to use Excel and Word
  • Highly motivated and demonstrates problem solving in a complex work environment while leading a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a multidisciplinary team and possess good interpersonal skills.
  • Experience assisting with plastics, urologic, surgical and orthopaedic procedures using sterile technique
  • Physically able to perform duties (standing for long periods of time)
  • Previous exemplary work and attendance record
  • Demonstrated clinical competency in performing venipuncture, initiating IV therapy, administering IV medications and line management.
  • High regard for confidentiality and advocacy for patients

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The described duties are representative, but not to be construed as all

inclusive. The incumbent may perform related or allied duties as directed.

The RNCB will:

  • Organize and support the various scheduled medicine and surgical clinics.
  • Manage and organize the daily clinic schedule and revise as needed
  • Prepare daily staffing assignments
  • Acts as a change agent to enhance quality of care, work environment and sustainability
  • Works collaboratively with the Manager regarding quality improvement measures.
  • Identifies opportunities for quality improvement (i.e. process and practice) and implementation and evaluation of quality improvement initiatives
  • Working with other members of the health care team, collaboratively assesses patient care needs and plans for the delivery of care to meet those needs.
  • Acts as a role model, working collaboratively with other team members
  • Evaluates and communicates special patient needs and /or staffing needs to assure safe quality care provision
  • Participated in committees under the discretion of the Nurse Manager
  • Sourcing and ordering surgical supplies and equipment
  • Complete incident reports and following up as required
  • Models professionalism: maintains standards of practice and professional boundaries as determined by the service and NANB
  • Acts in a leadership role for staff and leads by example
  • Promotes and demonstrates an interest in program activities by attending staff meetings, participating on committees as requested and contributing to the development/evaluation of Ambulatory Care nursing standards.
  • Maintains an awareness of fiscal responsibility and promotes a culture of cost aaccountability
  • Recognizes unsafe practices and intervenes to prevent injury to patients and staff. Provides follow up with Nurse Manager.
  • Maintains clinical knowledge of treatments, equipment and supplies pertinent to the service
  • Assists the physician with minor procedures (urology, surgical / plastic procedures, etc) and provides the support and comfort needs of the patient during such procedures.
  • Obtain, label and document specimens for laboratory testing, following the physician's orders and practice standards
  • Performs venipunctures and initiates intravenous therapy as needed.
  • Provides assistance and nursing support to the Wound Care clinic.
  • Performs wound care in the form of sterile dressing changes, suture / staple removal, debridement, irrigations, Vac Dressing application etc.
  • Experience with utilization of surgical instruments.
  • Administer Bladder Instillations
  • Book patient tests and appointments.
  • Participate in the orientation of and supports new staff members.
  • Provide teaching, instruction, counselling and health promotion to individuals.
  • Maintain data and collect statistics necessary for reports and quality assurance activity.
  • Maintains documentation within NANB standards of practice
  • Acts as a patient advocate, promoting an environment conducive to open communication and professionalism
  • Maintains personal certification skills required
  • Other occasional duties, as required
