Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in police science, public administration, criminology and/or a related field or any equivalent combination of training and/or experience and a minimum of seven to ten (7-10) years related police experience, including a minimum of five (5) years of supervisory responsibility.

Reporting to the Chief of Police, this multi-faceted position requires a high level of professionalism, integrity, tact, judgement, and initiative, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff, media, and outside agencies.

As a member of the Fredericton Police Force Senior Management Team, the Deputy Chief exemplifies the mission and core values of the Fredericton Police Force (FPF) and divisional activities with FPF organizational goals, objectives, and strategic priorities.

The Deputy Chief's primary responsibility is to lead, direct, plan and evaluate the administrative and operational services of the FPF. The Deputy Chief is responsible for strategic initiatives and projects for the Department. As well, the Deputy Chief coordinates with other police services and agencies to facilitate FPF goals and provides assistance to the Chief of Police.

What You'll Do:

Leadership

  • Assist the Chief of Police and the FPF Senior Management Team in developing and implementing departmental policies, goals, and objectives.
  • Provide strategic direction and oversight of their division, ensuring alignment with the department's mission, vision, and values.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate Senior Management staff and other personnel.
  • Promote and maintain an ethical, accountable, and transparent culture within the police department.

Partnerships

  • Develop and foster strong relationships with City staff and officials, community leaders, stakeholders, and other policing agencies to enhance collaboration and public safety.
  • Actively participate on various City committees, as well as committees with partners from the federal, provincial, and municipal levels of government, external agencies, not-for-profits, and NGOs.

Operational Oversight and Compliance

  • Ensure departmental compliance with legal standards, police ethics, and professional best practices.
  • Monitor and evaluate police operations, ensuring efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance with local, provincial, and federal legislation and regulation.
  • Stay informed on emerging trends, technologies, and innovations in law enforcement to recommend improvements and reforms.

Resource Management

  • Oversee human resource processes within the FPF including recruitment, hiring, promotion, internal transfers, retention, engagement, and succession planning.
  • Foster a safe, diverse, and inclusive work environment that supports the professional development and well-being of all personnel.
  • Assist in preparing and managing the department's budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with strategic priorities.
  • Ensure the proper allocation of resources and personnel to meet the needs of the department and the community.
