Job Opportunity:Senior Sector Strategist (Permanent)

The Senior Sector Strategist leads the strategy development and implementation for one or more of Invest Nova Scotia's priority sectors. This role directs the research and intelligence to support Invest Nova Scotia's business and trade development efforts within priority sectors. The Senior Sector Strategist is the "resident expert" in their sectors of focus, staying current on the latest developments, trends, and activity affecting businesses in the industry domestically and globally.

The Senior Sector Strategist contributes to business growth by identifying and prioritizing potential business opportunities, investments, and strategic partnerships and supporting efforts to implement these opportunities. This role takes a leadership role in strategy development and mentors other Strategy & Research team members.

In this role, the successful candidate will:

  • Lead multi-disciplinary teams to support developing and implementing strategic business initiatives.
  • Develop and/or maintain business intelligence by collecting and analyzing relevant data and information.
  • Monitor and interpret all trends affecting businesses within the Senior Sector Strategist's sector(s) (manufacturing, housing/construction and energy) of focus. Evaluate market size, competitor accomplishments and industry structures to make recommendations to senior management to assist in business development.
  • Support efforts to attract investment to Nova Scotia through opportunity identification, value prop development, jurisdictional analysis, and client site visits.
  • Support developing and evaluating new and/or improved methodologies, processes, and programming to support Invest Nova Scotia objectives.
  • Provide analysis, research, advice and recommendations on current economic and business development priorities and issues.
  • Lead the development of business-related position papers and studies.
  • Lead the investigation and research of new business opportunities and markets within the sector(s) of focus and analyze market potential.
  • Support with coaching and mentoring of new staff
  • Support the Trade Market Intelligence service through the scoping and editing of TMI reports.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with relevant industry associations, government departments and agencies, and other industry experts.
  • Work with/accompany Invest Nova Scotia Executives on relevant missions and conferences related to the sector(s) of focus, as required.

Education/ Professional Experience:

As a successful candidate, you possess a bachelor's degree combined with a minimum of ten years' experience in a sector or business development and/or strategy development role in the private or public sector. A master's degree would be considered an asset. An equivalent combination of a master's degree plus at least six years' experience may be considered.

Knowledge and experience in the following three sectors, manufacturing, housing / construction and energy would be considered an asset.

Key Competencies:

  • Ability to gather large amounts of qualitative and quantitative data from various stakeholders and independent research and recommend strategies to senior management.
  • Ability to express facts and ideas clearly and convincingly in writing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to expediently analyze market and trade data and make well-informed recommendations on business development and marketing strategies.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to share information concisely and to listen effectively.
  • Capable of leading, directing, and motivating cross-functional teams as required.
  • High attention to detail with strong organizational skills
  • Able to manage multiple priorities with critical timelines.
  • Ability to think creatively and develop innovative solutions to develop recommendations for organizational, business and export development initiatives.
  • Ability to demonstrate good judgement in the interests of the organization and its work.
  • High external awareness, identifies and keeps current on critical national and international policies and economic, political, and business trends.
  • Experience with data visualization tools and design platforms is considered an asset.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Possession of (or ability to obtain) a valid Canadian passport with no travel restrictions.
