POSITION: MANAGER OF SUPPORT SERVICES

HORIZONS at 106- Transitional Supportive Housing Initiative

About the initiative:

The transitional housing initiative, Horizons at 106, operating at 106 Airport Road marks a significant step forward in addressing homelessness and housing instability in our community. This innovative project, rooted in collaborative efforts and insights from successful models from across Canada, is poised to transform our shelter system in St. John's while prioritizing the integration of housing and health services to assist our most vulnerable neighbors.

The initiative is intended to be a supportive place for individuals who need additional health and housing support to be successful in their housing journey. The site will be staffed 24/7 to ensure residents have the necessary support to be successful.

About the Role:

The Manager of Support Services oversees the day-to-day on-site support services, ensuring effective supervision of staff, consistency in client support approaches, and adherence to policy and procedures. This position is responsible for supporting staff with coordinating intakes into and transitions out of the transitional housing site, while ensuring the seamless integration of a person-centered and trauma-informed approach care.

The Manager of Support Services brings extensive staff management experience and strong interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and inspire teams. It requires adeptness supervising, managing, training, coaching and supporting staff.

Responsibilities:

Overall

  • Oversee the day-to-day staffing needs of the transitional housing initiative
  • Ensure organizational activities are completed ethically and collaboratively to support operations and maintain a safe and dignified environment for residents
  • Demonstrate respect, cultural competence and knowledge of trauma-informed care in interactions with residents, staff, volunteers and collaborative partners
  • Cultivate a positive and inclusive workplace environment, emphasizing the development of a culture that embodies the principles of Harm Reduction, Trauma-Informed Practice, Client-Centered Support, and Housing First practices

Staff Support

  • Provide direct and indirect supervision to the Transitional Housing staffing team, with specific focus on the Floor Coordinator and Housing Support Worker teams
  • Establish a good communication system between management and the staff team
  • Manage and support staff through regular coaching and mentoring to effectively meet the initiative's goals
  • Provide guidance, feedback, and support for professional growth of staff team
  • Facilitate efficient communication and information exchange across project staffing
  • Implement and oversee the shift duty structure for day-to-day operations
  • Allocate appropriate staffing capacity to site operations and programs
  • Guide staff in effectively resolving conflict, including, client disputes and responding to crises as needed
  • Ensure support staff teams are entering relevant case notes and data to support a safe environment for all stakeholders

Intake and Transition

  • Implement and streamline efficient move-in and setup processes?for new residents with support staff
  • Develop and implement move-out processes for residents that are transitioning into longer-term housing options
  • Support the overall support structure process to ensure successful outcomes for residents
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications:

Education:

Preference will be given to applicants that have successfully completed a bachelor's degree in social work, leadership/management, or human services related program. A master's degree in an appropriate discipline is considered an asset.

Experience:

Ideally the candidate will have at least 4 years' relevant work experience in a human services or other relevant setting and 2 years of direct experience managing support staff in a housing-related setting is required. Similar experience in a healthcare, hospitality or communal living setting will also be considered.

Requirements:

  • Experience working with vulnerable or marginalized populations, with an understanding of the barriers and challenges caused by homelessness and poverty or lived experience with homelessness and/or poverty
  • Understanding of uses of substance use, mental health, and harm reduction gained through direct experience working with individuals
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills and ability to de-escalate and resolve issues of violence and / or conflicts
  • Extensive experience supervising, training, supporting and coaching staff
  • Experience with staff scheduling and proficiency in 24/7 staffing models
  • Demonstrated strong administrative skills including data management, report writing, and tracking associated with the day-to-day operations of a housing site
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities and deadlines
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Physical requirement to move around the site with some lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Strong relationship building skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite, particularly Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered
