Northwood is currently accepting applications for a Hospice, Registered Nurse.

Reporting to Clinical Practice Manager

Major Responsibilities:

  • Works to maintain the comfort and quality of life for those who are diagnosed with terminal diseases
  • Provides consultation for the coordination for the palliative care needs of those individuals referred to the services
  • Models and promotes comfort with death and dying and supports staff through education

Tasks:

  • Establishes effective relationships with residents and family
  • Counsels the resident and family in meeting nursing and related needs; promotes family involvement in care
  • Conducts comprehensive assessments of resident
  • Provides health care instructions to the patient as appropriate per assessment and plan
  • Modifies patient treatment plans as indicated by patients' responses and conditions
  • Interacts with other members of the multi-disciplinary team to coordinate and promote holistic care for residents and clients
  • Ability to resolve conflict and facilitate difficult conversations.
  • Facilitates relevant university student practicum with the services as appropriate
  • Participates in the formulation, review, and maintenance of Hospice policies and procedures
  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation pertaining to clients and staff
  • Records patients' medical information and vital signs
  • Monitors, records, and reports symptoms or changes in patients' conditions
  • Maintains clinical skills as required and seeks learning opportunities to remain current.
  • Maintains awareness of current community, trends and developments in hospice care and applies this awareness to enhance the hospice role within the facility.
  • Promotes Northwood through maintaining a positive working relationship with community groups and resources.
  • Performs other related duties as required

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's of Science in Nursing, Associate's degree in Nursing or graduation from an accredited and approved nursing program
  • Registered Nurse in the province of Nova Scotia
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a hospice nurse
  • Demonstrated skills in palliative care nursing in a long term care setting
  • Minimum of 5 years nursing experience preferred with evidence of strong and demonstrated clinical assessment skills.
  • Experience in long term care and acute care considered an asset
  • Experience working in a unionized environment considered an asset
  • Aware of LEAP and Pallium Canada Standards
  • Knowledge of the following: Medical Terminology, Medical Equipment, Fall Prevention Methods, Emergency Protocols, Risk Management Procedures, Crisis Intervention methods, Proper Body Mechanics, Hospice Philosophy and the issues of aging, Knowledge of group dynamics and the teaching process
  • Must have the following attributes: Professional, Respectful, Supportive, Empathetic/Compassionate, Dependable, Ethical
  • Possess the following abilities: Confidentiality, Follow Employer Policies, Problem Sensitivity, Social Sensitivity

Salary: As per Northwood Scale

Hours: 32 hours bi-weekly
