POSITION: HOUSING SUPPORT WORKER - TRANSITIONAL HOUSING INITIATIVE

About the initiative:

The transitional housing initiative operating at 106 Airport Road marks a significant step forward in addressing homelessness and housing instability in our community. The initiative is intended to be a supportive place for individuals who need additional health and housing support to be successful in their housing journey. The site will be staffed 24/7 to ensure residents have the necessary support to be successful.

WE ARE EXPANDING AND NEED MORE STAFF TO JOIN OUR TEAM. In order to staff the initiative and support residents, we are recruiting immediately for 8- and 12- hour shifts, 7 days per week. All shifts will be double staffed. There is an immediate need for part-time and full-time availability.

About the Role:

The Support Worker is responsible for assisting clients staying at the transitional housing site and assisting in the day-to-day operations as needed. The Support Worker is responsible for providing information, referrals, goal planning, and safety planning to residents, along with crisis intervention support and other support services as needed.

The Support Worker has values that include recognizing individual strengths, building respect and trust, and offering unconditional acceptance. They are comfortable working with and responding to people experiencing crisis, and those who may be using substances. The Support Worker demonstrates awareness of personal boundaries and can communicate these effectively.

The environment is person-centered, trauma-informed, anti-oppressive and non-judgmental.

Responsibilities:

General

  • Contribute to the day-to-day operations of the site
  • Provide regular reports and communicate pertinent information to oncoming staff during shift change
  • Communicate effectively with residents and external agencies to ensure comprehensive support
  • Ensure a sanitary environment
  • Demonstrate respect, cultural competence and knowledge of trauma-informed care in interactions with residents, staff, volunteers and collaborative partners
  • Other duties as specified by the Transitional Housing Director and Manager of Operations

Client Assistance

  • Provide support and assistance to clients staying at the site
  • Foster a safe and welcoming environment for clients with experiences of homelessness
  • Conduct orientation with residents and review the rules/expectations, along with residents' rights and responsibilities
  • Provide information to residents regarding available programming, services, and resources
  • Assist clients in setting and working towards individual goals and safety planning
  • Advocate on behalf of clients to access necessary support services and resources
  • Maintain client confidentiality and privacy
  • Maintain accurate client records and is responsible for updating client information on an electronic database system

Crisis Intervention

  • Work with individuals experiencing substance use, providing non-judgmental support
  • Address and respond to situations as they arise (including notifying on-call if needed)
  • Provide crisis intervention support as needed
  • Strive to maintain the safety of the communal environment and protect the rights of all residents

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Education in the human services field, equivalent experience, or a combination of both

Requirements:

  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Understanding of uses of substance use, mental health, and harm reduction
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills and ability to de-escalate and resolve issues of violence and/or conflicts
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities and deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Strong documentation and administrative skills
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution and de-escalation skills
  • Physical requirement to move around the site with some lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong relationship building skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite, particularly Outlook and Word
  • All applicants MUST be able to provide a current Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Criminal Record Screening Certificate and Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered
  • All applicants MUST be able to work rotational shift work.

The hourly rate for this position is $21.50 per hour plus shift differential and vacation pay.
