JOB PURPOSE

Perioperative nursing encompasses professional and clinical nursing activities which focus on identifying and meeting the needs of the surgical patient while applying the nursing process in a caring manner within the scope of practice as outlined by the NBLPN Competency Profile. Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the Operating Room Technician (LPN) is responsible and accountable for providing individualized patient care, having a working knowledge of Surgical Program philosophy, objectives and policies as well as ORNAC standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from an approved school for Licensed Practical Nurses
  • Must be currently registered with the N.B. Association of Licensed Practical Nurses
  • Minimum 1 year recent (within past 5 years) operating room experience or successful completion within last 5 years of an approved Operating Room Technician course.
  • Current BLS for Healthcare Providers
  • Ability to work between Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital Operating room and Oromocto Public Hospital Operating room.
  • Ability to perform the duties of the position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The role of the Perioperative LPN includes but is not limited to:

  • Patient Advocacy: The Perioperative LPN responds to the communicated and the uncommunicated needs of the surgical patient offering advocacy, assistance, and support through their surgical experience.
  • Continuity of Care: The Perioperative LPN provides continuity of care as the link between the nursing units and the operating room during the patient's preoperative, intra-operative and immediate postoperative phases.
  • Focus of Care: Under the guidance of the Registered Nurse the Perioperative LPN plans and organizes all activities to meet individual patient needs. These needs become the focus of the LPN's activities
  • Clinical Skills: The Perioperative LPNs clinical skills are based on standards, theory learned and hands on clinical experience. The scope of practice will be based on ORNAC and ANBLPN Standards in conjunction with Horizon Health Network Departmental Policies and Procedures.
