Computer Support Specialist

The Computer Support Specialist has responsibility for the diagnosis, analysis and resolution of microcomputer problems and failures and iSeries requests reported through the Service Desk. This position also does configuration, setup, install and testing of purchased microcomputer hardware and supported software including operating systems, office productivity suites, email and anti-virus. In addition, this position performs Computer Operator and Service Desk tasks. In responding to the requests, the position must ensure that business downtime is minimized. The position must also ensure that the integrity, privacy and confidentiality of corporate databases and electronic information are protected.

Role Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses, analyzes and resolves Tier 1 microcomputer problems and failures in each of WorkplaceNL's offices via Service Desk requests.
  • Assists with logging and tracking incidents, problems and changes requested through the Service Desk.
  • Configures, sets up, tests and installs microcomputer hardware and supported software, including operating systems, office productivity suites, antivirus solutions, network communications and remote access devices.
  • Responsible for assisting with Windows Active Directory and iSeries access requests.
  • Backs up and restores client data using BRMS (Backup Recovery Media Services) and VEEAM backup software.
  • Assists clients in transferring computer systems to new work locations.
  • Responsible for Computer Operator tasks as required.
  • Ensures that the integrity, privacy and confidentiality of corporate database and electronic information are protected.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or closely related field.
  • Three years' experience working with various technical infrastructures including: microcomputer hardware, Microsoft Windows Operating Systems, Microsoft Office Productivity Suite, iSeries operations procedures, BRMS and VEEAM backup software, Audio/Video conferencing solutions and various LAN/WAN networking technologies.
  • The ability to work in a team environment is important. As well, the incumbent must have well developed communication, organization, analytical, interpersonal, and self-management skills. The incumbent must also be adaptable, understand change management, and be customer focused.

Responsibilities

Some key responsibilities of the Computer Support Specialist include:

• Diagnoses, analyzes and resolves tier 1 microcomputer problems and failures in each of WorkplaceNL's offices via Service Desk requests using such tools as remote control, software distribution, etc. Assumes ownership of all related service desk issues.

• Maintains and repairs microcomputers and related peripheral computer equipment to provide operation with minimum downtime.

• Configures, sets up, tests and installs purchased microcomputer hardware and supported software, including operating systems, office productivity suites, e-mail, antivirus solutions, network communications and remote access devices.

• Communicates with co-workers, vendors, clients and supervisors regarding the nature of problems, alternate solutions, anticipated resolution timeframes and results of evaluations.

• Assesses capability of hardware and software to perform required tasks, proposes a solution and implements solution, including customization of operating systems and software applications. Assists clients in selection and evaluation of appropriate hardware and software.

• Ensures that the integrity, privacy and confidentiality of corporate database and electronic information are protected.

Qualifications

Ideal Qualifications

• University degree in computer science or related discipline.

• Three (3) years' experience working with various technical infrastructures including: microcomputer hardware, Windows Operating Systems, iSeries operations procedures, BRMS and VEEAM backup software, Audio/Video conferencing solutions, LAN/WAN technologies, communications standards, security systems and Microsoft Office productivity suite.

Experience and an educational equivalency will be considered.
