Lactation Consultant, Permanent Full-TimeMaternal Child & Population Health, Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre, Grand Falls-Windsor

Definition of work: Reporting to the Nurse Manager for Families, Children, and Obstetrics, the lactation consultant will promote initiation and continuation of breastfeeding through in-service education for health providers, developing resources and educational material, initiating support networks, and developing and implementing promotional strategies. Providing clinical expertise on breastfeeding through assessment, counseling, and consultation; identifying and participating in research, program evaluation, and policy development. Duties for this position will be carried out in the community and institutional setting, with approximately half time of the position designated to each setting. Travel thorough the region as required. The successful candidate must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for promoting and supporting person-and family-centered care, demonstrate a commitment to safety and partner with all team members to improve worker and patient safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks and implementing improvements.

Required qualifications:
* Graduation from an approved school of nursing with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
* Completion of a recognized lactation consultant program (minimum 300 contact hours) and certification with the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE), or willingness to complete within the next available enrollment.
* A minimum of two (2) years experience within the last five (5) years working with breastfeeding families.
* Demonstrated;
* consistent professional approach,
* strong leadership ability,
* knowledge of the principles of adult learning and staff development
* ability to manage conflict,
* understanding of the evaluation process and the QI process
* commitment to personal continuing education,
* ability to work with computers including the Meditech system and CRMS,
* superior written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal and facilitation skills,
* ability to prepare and present educational material in an effective, concise manner,
* ability to develop comprehensive learning needs assessment of clients and staff and develop work objectives based on results of assessment,
* knowledge of current nursing research and practice standards,
* knowledge and commitment to breastfeeding adhering national and global recommendations.
* A valid driver's license and use of private vehicle is required.
* Flexible working hours may be required to meet client need as per the NLNU Collective Agreement.
* Consistent demonstration of Central Health's corporate values; Innovation, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence (I CARE)
* A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required for this position
* A satisfactory certificate of conduct from the RCMP or local police authority.

Applicants who do not possess a Bachelor Degree in Nursing must be willing to complete an approved/recognized post diploma/certificate program in Public Health/Community Health at the first available opportunity as determined by the employer. The successful applicant must successfully complete the post diploma/certificate program within the program's designated timeframe and will start work in the position upon successful completion. Funding to complete the program will be provided by NLHS.

Hours of work: 75 hours biweekly (Shift work may be required)
