Marine Atlantic is currently looking for a Human Resources Business Partner to work with our Labour Relations department, located in North Sydney, NS.

The Human Resources Department is responsible for developing and implementing strategies that foster strong employee engagement with Marine Atlantic's vision in the areas of employee and leadership planning, labour relations planning, employee development, workforce and succession planning. The Labour Relations division provides information and advice relating to collective agreements, company policies and legislated labour and employment requirements, and is responsible for the negotiation and administration of Marine Atlantic's collective agreements.

Reporting to the Labour Relations Manager, Human Resources (HR) Business Partners provide business unit specific strategic and operational HR services to management and employees related to the people-related issues impacting their business unit with an objective to deliver people solutions to business problems.

The HR Business Partners are the key contact with union leadership, and will endeavor to foster positive, open, transparent relationships with key union leaders.

Additional Key Areas of Responsibility

• Proactively supports the delivery of HR processes.
• Provides coaching and advisory services to managers/supervisors regarding HR matters such as complaints, disputes, and disciplinary investigations and actions, ensuring proper interpretation and application of company policies, collective agreement provisions and relevant legislation.
• Administers multiple collective agreements, including providing interpretation and clarification to managers and supervisors, and recommending grievance resolutions that are consistent across departments.
• Serves as lead investigator or support for the investigation of complaints including participation in disciplinary investigations and meetings, respectful workplace complaints and other related matters.
• Provides education and information to managers and employees within the business unit on key HR programs, policies, and initiatives.
• Builds and maintains relationships with local union representatives and individual employees.
• Ensures regular communication is provided to union leadership regarding potential or identified issues within the business unit and coordinates regular communication forums such as management and union meetings required by collective agreements, to enhance the relationship with union leadership.
• For grievances, mediations, arbitrations, and hearings, researches, acquires, and provides data, facts and supporting material required by Legal Counsel to prepare Company's position, including obtaining and reviewing grievance history and relevant evidence.
• Assists in the planning and development of proposals for exchange at collective bargaining, including research of contractual terms in other organizations and trends and developments in Canadian labour relations. Participates in negotiations process as required.
• Participates in business change initiatives and projects to provide support with respect to Human Resources matters and recommending options.
• Within the area of responsibility, reviews proposed organizational changes, changes to all vacancies and/or added positions prior to posting and recruitment and assesses for need, consistency, and appropriate salary as well as union or management affiliation.
• Participates in the hiring process, including interviewing candidates for both key unionized and management positions within the area of responsibility.
• Provides HR leadership and support for the administration and delivery of the attendance management program and provides support in conjunction with Health, Safety and Environment on matters related to disability management, such as workplace accommodations.

• Assists in the accomplishment of company objectives by performing other related duties as required.

What qualifications do I need to be considered for this opportunity?

Education and Experience

  • University Degree or College Diploma in relevant field.
  • Minimum three (3) to five (5) years of experience in relevant role.

OR

A combination of equivalent education, job-related training, and work experience in a related position.

Additional Qualifications

• Experience in proper interpretation and application of company policies, collective agreement provisions and relevant legislation.
• Experience providing coaching and advisory services to managers/supervisors regarding HR matters such as complaints, disputes, and disciplinary investigations.
• Capable of providing education and information to managers and employees on key HR programs, policies, and initiatives.
• Experience with the hiring process, including interviewing and selecting candidates' positions within the area of responsibility.
• Experience working with an attendance management program and provides support in conjunction with Health Safety and Environment (HSE) on matters related to disability management, such as workplace accommodations.
• Strong interpersonal, impact and influence skills with the ability to engage others effectively through a confident, collaborative, and convincing style.
• Detail oriented, well organized and a demonstrated ability to function effectively with a high degree of interdependence and autonomy.
• Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize and multi-task.
• Strong written and communications skills.
• Strong research and problem-solving skills.
• Proficient use of Microsoft office products such as Excel, Power Point and Word.

Asset Qualifications

• Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) Designation.
• Training and/or experience in investigating procedures.
• Training and/or experience in alternate dispute resolution and interest-based negotiations.
