Who We Are

Torngat Wildlife Plants and Fisheries Secretariat, the Torngat Secretariat, is an organization dedicated to supporting the Torngat Wildlife and Plants Co-management Board, and the Torngat Joint Fisheries Board with implementing chapters 12 and 13 of the Labrador Inuit Land Claim Agreement.

Overview of the Role

Reporting to the Senior Policy Analyst, the GIS Analyst is responsible for providing geospatial and data management support to the Torngat Secretariat's research programs laid out in the workplan. The GIS Analyst plays a pivotal role in data collection, analysis, and visualization. All in the overall effort to support co-management of resources in the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Area.

As the Torngat Secretariat's GIS Analyst, you will use your expertise in GIS software, data analysis, and spatial modeling to create accurate maps/visualizations, assess habitat suitability, and track population trends of wildlife and fisheries species in the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Area. You will work on a broad set of projects and should possess good time management and the ability to prioritize tasks. Your skills will be essential for developing effective policies to support the co-management of wildlife, plants, and fisheries.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with team members to design and implement effective data collection strategies, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and efficiency in capturing required information.
  • Develop, document, and enforce comprehensive data management plans, including data audits, backups, and archiving procedures to maintain data integrity over time.
  • Providing geospatial analytical support for the development of wildlife, plants, and fisheries research programs that assist co-management decision making.
  • Create high-quality maps and visual representations of data for use in reports and presentations ensuring they are clear, accurate, and tailored to the needs of various audiences as requested.
  • Lead the planning, coordination, and implementation of wildlife and fisheries community mapping initiatives. Engage with Nunatsiavut communities to gather, validate, and integrate their data into broader research efforts.
  • Travel to communities to present research findings, share data, and engage with stakeholders, ensuring clear communication and fostering collaborative relationships.
  • Managing software licenses and maintaining software programs, ensuring the Secretariat is utilizing applicable programs to their full potential.
  • Create and regularly update detailed metadata for all datasets, ensuring that all data is well-documented, easily accessible, and usable by team members and future researchers.

Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor's Degree, diploma, or certification in related field or discipline with courses in GIS/Remote Sensing, spatial analysis, and database management.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience managing GIS projects, including data acquisition, analysis, and reporting.
  • Proven experience in GIS analysis, geospatial data management, or a related field.
  • Proficient in ESRI ArcGIS Pro / Online software suite, and related tools for spatial analysis, cartography, and data management.
  • Demonstrated ability in sourcing and downloading up-to-date satellite imagery from online platforms.
  • Experience working with geospatial analysis related to wildlife and fisheries management is considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (OneDrive/SharePoint).
  • Knowledge of the implementation of CARE and FAIR principles for data collection and management.

Both boards were created by the Labrador Inuit Land Claim Agreement and are responsible for a range of decision-making and recommendation processes related to the management of wildlife in the Nunatsiavut region.
