Position Overview:

The City of Saint John welcomes new and diverse talent.

We would like a chance to welcome you as Assistant Building Inspector.

•Do you have training in Civil Engineering Technology?

•Do you like to work in a multifaceted position in a collaborative team environment?

•Do you pride yourself on your attention to detail, your excellent customer service delivery, and meeting team targets?

If you answered "yes" to the three questions above, please read on!

Here's the opportunity:

Saint John's unprecedented growth rate makes this an exciting time to be working for the City in a key role in building construction.

•As an Assistant Building Inspector, you will ensure that the construction and occupancy of new and existing buildings meet minimum acceptable standards per the established building codes and property-related by-laws.

•You will determine if the work related to the approved design is being completed in accordance with established standards.

•If this sounds like a job sternly delivering unwelcome news, it isn't. Our approach is communicative and collaborative: you will work with individuals to achieve compliance with these standards before more corrective actions are needed - in the hope of proactively preventing that step.

Here's what we offer you:

•Excellent pension and benefits.

•Opportunity to grow: This is a progressive position - and we require you to progress. You can apply with as little as the minimum of the two-year-diploma (level 5 salary). Your salary will increase progressively (up to level 9) as you gain years of experience and the required professional qualifications.

•Currently a four-day compressed work week. (This is a pilot, so it may change.)

•A great team environment.

•You can see why the City of Saint John is an employer of choice!

Essential Qualifications:

Here's what we need from you:

•Successful completion of a two-year community college program (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering Technology in a Structural, Building Systems, Construction Management, or Architectural stream.

•A working knowledge of Microsoft Office Systems.

•A Class 5 Driver's License.

•Knowledge in construction of residential and commercial properties.

•Effective oral communication skills combining clarity with diplomacy, for interaction with many and varied types of people.

•Strong written communication skills for preparing clear, concise, and accurate reports on inspections made.

•The ability to read, understand, apply, and convey data derived from plans, blue-prints, maps, specifications, by-laws, codes, standards, proposals, and estimates.

•Membership in the New Brunswick Society of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (NBSCETT) is required, once you are eligible. You must be prepared to obtain Level 3 certification in the New Brunswick Building Officials Association (NBBOA).

The successful applicant will be eligible to work a compressed work week of 4 days (Monday to Thursday) throughout the trial period of the City's recently adopted Compressed Work Week Trial. This schedule is subject to change.
