THE POSITION:

The Halifax Convention Centre managed by Events East Group is now inviting applications for the position of Kitchen Steward (casual) with our Stewarding team.

Reporting to the Stewarding Manager, the Kitchen Steward is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness of kitchen equipment and surfaces, assisting in waste disposal and recycling efforts, participating in event preparations, and other day-to-day kitchen activities, as required.

A Kitchen Steward is considered an employee who can work in an indirectly supervised environment.

This casual hourly position will operate in the Halifax Convention Centre working closely with members of the culinary team.


THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operations:

  • Wear the provided Events East uniform(s) according to the departmental dress standards.
  • Perform assigned tasks to ensure the smooth delivery of food service and related cleaning services are completed.
  • Safely use various dishware washing machines.
  • Clean surfaces using the appropriate chemicals within the Food and Beverage areas.
  • Clean, store, and properly maintain equipment.
  • Clean stationary equipment in place throughout kitchens such as kettles, tilt skillets, etc.
  • Sweep and mop floors in relevant areas using a broom and mop.
  • Clean, polish, and store kitchen supplies, equipment, and dishes in the appropriate storage areas.
  • Gather dishes and equipment from various kitchens to properly clean within the dishwashing area.
  • Safely transport hot boxes, Queen Mary carts, and other transportation equipment.
  • Assist in storing food and beverage supply deliveries, as needed.
  • Assist the culinary team with plated events by setting up requested equipment, assisting with plating up using the conveyor belt, and preparing coffee.
  • Properly sort and remove compost, recyclables, and garbage using bay lift properly.
  • Other duties as required.

Administration:

  • Adhere to all Events East Group policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Ensure that food and beverage equipment is treated respectfully, according to the job procedures and operational standards, with a duty to report those in violation to the Stewarding Manager.
  • Maintain the supply of necessary cleaning supplies in various kitchens by stocking supplies and communicating low inventories to the Stewarding Manager.
  • Be attentive to event needs, ensuring tasks are completed in a timely manner and in consideration of events taking place throughout the building (i.e. noise sensitivities).

Leadership:

  • Maintain positive working relationships with other team members.
  • Act as a positive role model for all staff members in job performance, work ethic, and disposition.
  • Foster positive relationships with all teams, championing organizational values and recognizing colleagues who demonstrate supporting behaviors.
  • Actively, constructively participate in meetings, projects, and working groups as assigned and directed.

Training & Development:

  • Support and participate fully in all training and development initiatives.
  • Support adoption of new technologies and technical skills as they are introduced to the department.

Health & Safety:

  • Report all safety hazards to the direct supervisor as soon as is reasonably possible. Take action to correct the safety hazard if possible and reasonable.
  • Report all incidents and near misses to the direct supervisor as soon as is reasonably possible. Participate fully in the incident and near miss investigation procedure.
  • Wear and use the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Report any damaged PPE to the direct supervisor, promptly.

THE PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Pre-Requisites:

  • Clean safety record and satisfactory attendance record.
  • Successfully meets performance standards of previous role.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or educational equivalent.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be available to work varying shifts, including mornings, days, evenings past midnight, weekends, holidays, and occasionally 'on call' as required.
    • Shifts can be up to 12 hours in length.
  • Throughout the shift, the ability to meet the following physical demands is required:
    • Stand, walk, and climb occasionally to continually on various flooring and step types.
    • Bend, squat, crouch, and twist minimally to frequently.
    • Reach overhead, forward, and to the side occasionally to frequently.
    • Lift above the shoulder, to the shoulder, and to the waist 5-45lbs minimally to continually.
    • Carry 15-45lbs minimally to frequently.
    • Push and pull 20-60lbs minimally too frequently.
  • This work environment has the following physical conditions:
    • Hot and cold temperatures
    • Moisture accumulated in the air and on surfaces
    • Frequent noise from various locations
    • Various activities occurring in the same workspaces
  • Other physical demands as required.


Definition: Casual employees are those individuals who are not regularly scheduled and who work less than twenty-five (25) hours per week on an average basis.
