The Legislative Library provides information, reference and research services in an impartial manner to the Members and staff of the Legislative Assembly, as well as government departments and the public. The Library is also the official depository for New Brunswick government documents. Reporting to the Legislative Librarian, the Reference and Outreach Librarian should be a dynamic, client-oriented individual.
Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
  • Managing reference services;
  • Providing reference services to library patrons;
  • Overseeing the quality of reference responses;
  • Promoting library services to MLAs, Legislative Assembly staff; and other library patrons;
  • Supervising library assistants;
  • Updating internal databases;
  • Creating newsletters and other outreach materials for specific groups of patrons;
  • Assisting the Legislative Librarian with collection development;
  • Creating displays;
  • Assisting with digitization projects.

Essential Qualifications: A Master's degree in Library and/or Information Studies from an ALA accredited program and a minimum of four (4) years of related experience including some supervisory experience.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently or in a team;
  • Flexibility and adaptability to serve a varied client group with changing priorities and deadlines;
  • Demonstrate ability to exercise sound judgement, tact, discretion and sensitivity to functioning in a political environment.

Subject to the response to this competition, an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered, or the required years of experience may be increased.
Written and spoken competence in English is required.

Asset Qualifications: Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate a familiarity with the New Brunswick culture and context and an understanding of the structure and operation of the Government of New Brunswick as well as knowledge of parliamentary procedure and processes.

Work Environment

Office Location: Fredericton
Standard hours of work: Monday to Friday with occasional evening hours when the Legislative Assembly is in session.

Salary: $55,640 to $77,818 annually, depending on qualifications.
