  • Provide expertise in the field of Geological Structure to the Vale Base Metals North Atlantic (NA) mines and FEL studies in order to assure high level quality of Geological Structure data acquisition, validation, processing and interpretation of geological structures to reduce the risks associated with geotechnical and Falls of Ground hazards.
  • Assist the Senior Specialist – Structural Geologist with the developemnt of the appropriate Structural Geology Standards and Programs to meet all legal and Vale Base Metal's internal policy requirements for all NA mine operations.
Major responsibilities will include:
  • Adhering to, implementing, and demonstrating a commitment Vale Base Metals North Atlantic's health, safety and environmental rules and practices.
  • Performing robust analysis and creating advanced 3D geological/structural models of multi-disciplinary data sets to inform decision making with respect to mine planning, geotechnical, Falls of Ground risk management at both Manitoba and Vosiey Bay mine operations.
  • Providing technical reviews of past and current major ground instability events and evaluate, in collaboration with ground control, mine planning and geology teams, possible links between mine structure, mining, and Falls of Ground events.
  • Identifying critical structures that may cause instability and hazards to excavation and mining by working collaboratively with Ground Control Engineers.
  • Participating in and contributing to external reviews, audits and projects led by the Corporate Geotechnical Group, including Geotechnical Review Board (GRB), Integrated Operation Assessment (IOA) and annual KPD Output Technical Assurance Process where possible.
  • Participating in peer reviews of major ground instabilities if required and providing technical support to the investigation from structural geology perspectives.
  • Providing review and support to all major FEL studies on structural geology perspectives.
  • Establishing best practices assuring high level quality of Geological Structure data acquisition, validation, and analysis.
  • Assisting Lead – Structural Geologist with the developemnt of the appropriate Structural Geology Standards and Programs to meet all legal and Vale Base Metal's internal policy requirements for all North American mine operations.
  • Assisting in the completion of geotechnical core logs and collaborate with ground control engineers in the interpretation of geotechnical core logs, inclduing geological structures.
  • Assisting in the planning of the diamond-drilling programs with respect to structural geology requirements.
About YouEducation:
  • MSc or PhD in Structural Geology
  • Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo) Preferred
Experience:
  • 8-10 years of relevant professional experience
Skills:
  • Proficiency in one or more 3D modelling packages
  • Experience in Leapfrog Geo and Datamine preferred
  • Exposure to geotechnical engineering principles preferred
  • Analysis of Acoustic/Optical Televiewer data are considered an asset.
