Reporting to the Manager, External Communicationsthis role will contribute to the development of external communications strategies to support business objectives across Medavie, Medavie Blue Cross and Medavie Health Services working collaboratively with internal and external partners.
The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of external media channels to promote our brands, leveraging business activities, sponsorships, speaking opportunities, corporate initiatives/priorities, as well as industry perspective and expertise.
Main Responsibilities :
- Provide advice and support in counselling business partners on strategic external communication strategies and tactics that support the business objectives across Medavie and its operating companies.
- Develop external communications materials, including (but not limited to): key messages, news releases, speaking remarks for community events, presentations, op-eds, corporate appointment announcements, etc.; liaises directly with internal and external business partners to obtain relevant detail/input.
- Act as the main media point of contact for Medavie Blue Cross in Quebec; works in close consultation with business partners to support timely responses to requests for information from media and interviews.
- Generate and foster relationships with media (mainstream and local) and help to identify emerging opportunities and challenges that require proactive communication, including new opportunities for enhanced media profile in the market.
- Daily monitoring of key regional and national news media to identify issues that may impact the operations and/or reputation of our group of companies.
- Maintain a big picture view of the organization, issues or topics of relevancy, and knowledge of the media cycle to inform strategic thinking and advice about communications; supports the generation of an ongoing news-cycle/steady stream of regular earned media coverage.
- Ongoing engagement with internal and external partners.
- Support the marketing team in their communications.
- Communications support for special projects and ad hoc initiatives, as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in Communications, Public Relations or other related field
- Minimum 5 to 7 years' experience in corporate communications, focusing on external with an ability to work with the media, provide media coaching.
- In order to meet the needs of the English-speaking clientele, this position requires bilingualism.
- Exceptional written communications skills, including editing, proofreading and attention to detail.
- Story-teller with an ability to take complex information and distill into digestible, engaging, informative pieces; ability to modify writing tone and voice to match the needs of different audiences/media targets.
- A demonstrated ability to advise senior leaders and create approaches that address business demands/needs.
- Ability to deal with highly confidential and sensitive subjects/issues in a professional manner.
- Solid time management skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities and produce materials to meet tight deadlines.
- Team player with a focus on supporting colleagues, trying new approaches and delivering results.
- Strong interpersonal, project management and relationship-building skills with an ability to work with multi-stakeholder teams in a fast-paces environment, across locations and operating companies; responds to requests quickly and professionally.
- A self-starter and problem-solver who works independently and as part of a geographically dispersed team.
- Understanding of media engagement strategies; the healthcare and/or insurance industry; advanced skills with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and/or other presentation software; flexible to work outside of normal hours and open to occasional travel.
