The (Expanded Media) Technician is responsible for coordinating technical support in Expanded Media and Media Arts related disciplines. Responsibilities include controlling the inventory, circulation and maintenance of equipment, supervision of student assistants and providing instructions concerning the proper use of the equipment and facilities to students and faculty in the area.

The technician coordinates activities within the Film/Media/ Expanded Media area, including planning, budget management, staffing, policy development, general maintenance, and acts as a consultant as required. Consults on a regular basis with division faculty to determine curriculum goals and how they will be implemented, for example by supporting curriculum with necessary resources.

Responsibilities

Support for Expanded Media programming

  • Troubleshoot requests from and provide recommendations to students, faculty and staff and act as a first point of contact when fielding requests to access Expanded Media services.
  • Conduct workshops, orientations and training sessions in use of technology and equipment related to Expanded Media.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to students, faculty, and staff in order to realize fulfillment of teaching and learning goals related to program curriculum.
  • Help desk assistance and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain detailed records for the Expanded Media area with respect to purchasing, planning, inventory, staffing, equipment circulation, and repair histories.

Support for Academy Help Desk and Equipment Storage

  • Maintain equipment stores by performing and/or arranging repairs and procurement activity.
  • Train faculty, staff and students relating to A/V media and academic computing processes related to teaching and learning spaces.
  • Train and supervise student assistants to assist in supporting academic and public events, help desk support and service.
  • Administer established health and safety policies/practices, promotes safe work habits, and maintain equipment for safe use.

Support for teaching and learning

  • Identify, develop and maintain technical capacity of facilities with particular emphasis on smart classrooms, auditoriums and computer labs.
  • Provide technical and coordination support for NSCAD events, and teaching and learning activities. This includes booking required equipment, organizing student assistants as needed, A/V documentation, organizing set up and operation of equipment, and post-production work.

Qualifications

A Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Media-based practice and related fields combined with three (3) years related experience with audio-visual and relevant computer equipment and software (or the equivalent combination of education and experience) is required. The incumbent must have specialized knowledge of media based technology, audio-visual and computer equipment and software, and possess excellent troubleshooting skills. Experience working in a post-secondary educational environment is an asset.
