Job Information and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Associate Vice President, People & Culture, the Senior Compensation and Classification Consultant:

  • Consults, collaborates, and provides advice on organizational and job design.
  • Participates in senior management discussions regarding initiatives/changes in organization structures and provides corresponding job evaluation support, analysis, and compensation recommendations.
  • Acts as the lead resource on job classifications for new and existing positions and related inquiries
  • Proactively meets with Senior leaders to determine what the strategic needs are for their department/divisions and plans to develop and evaluate new positions.
  • Leads and participates in projects to streamline processes.
  • Maintains all records relating to job descriptions, job evaluation process and classification systems.
  • Participates in salary surveys, ad hoc compensation surveys and compilation of survey market data.
  • Builds knowledge capacity and expertise with partners, clients and colleagues by leading presentations and training.
  • Provides expert advice on classification and compensation related issues.
  • Interprets and administers language governing job evaluation and salary administration in collective agreements and Human Resource policies and procedures.
  • Provides compensation recommendations (e.g., new hires, promotions/demotions, acting, ad hoc increases) ensuring internal equity and adherence to policy.
  • Provides advice on the application of the collective agreements as it relates to compensation programs.
  • Conduct market research, benchmarking, and trend analysis practices to ensure internal and external equity and competitiveness.
  • Monitor compliance with legislation and compensation policy, and document changes to existing policies
  • Researches and analyzes trends and best practices, and compiles compensation data to assist in the design of compensation programs.
  • Works with the Associate Vice President, People & Culture in developing, coordinating and implementing various projects.

Experience and Education Requirements

To be the successful Senior Compensation and Classification Consultant you will have:

  • Bachelor's degree with courses in Human Resources and/or Compensation or Job Design or an acceptable equivalent.
  • Minimum of five (5) years' compensation and classification experience consulting, collaborating and leading projects or an acceptable combination of education and experience.
  • Canadian Compensation Professional (CCP) or Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) is an asset.
  • Experience conducting market analyses and job evaluations.
  • Experience working in a unionized public sector environment.
  • Experience providing solutions-oriented advice to managers and people leaders.
  • Experience with an HRIS with the ability to learn new systems.
  • Advanced working knowledge of relevant employment, labour and human rights legislation and regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of the compensation cycle including salary administration, surveys and market analysis.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to resolve complex problems.
  • Ability to synthesize data and present recommendations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to respond to clients and stakeholders in a timely manner and multi-task efficiently.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills with ability to build productive, collaborative relationships between management, employees, unions, and other internal/external stakeholders.
  • Ability to function independently with minimal supervision and as a part of a team.
  • High degree of cultural proficiency with a demonstrated track record of working effectively within and across equity-seeking communities.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Products with at least intermediate excel skill to perform various look-up functions, create Pivot tables and create basic dashboard.
  • Experience in a leadership role would be considered an asset.
  • A professional Classification and Compensation designation is an asset.
