JOB PURPOSE

As part of the Trauma NB staff and reporting to a designated Trauma Coordinator, the Trauma Resource Nurse is responsible for supporting optimal trauma care within their facility and in other nearby trauma centres as assigned. Trauma Resource Nurses are responsible for the delivery of trauma-related education, quality improvement, prevention and research activities as assigned by Trauma New Brunswick (NB) and serve a critical role in the collection of trauma-related data from their respective site(s).

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Nursing degree from a recognized university is an important asset
  • Minimum 5 years current clinical experience in Emergency/Critical Care, including the care of trauma patients
  • Active registration with the New Brunswick Association of Registered Nurses
  • Current certification in TNCC. Certifications in ACLS, ENC(C) and ENPC are assets.
  • Computer and systems competency in the following areas: enters data, retrieves data, assembles and organizes data, uses and analyzes data, integrates diverse sources of data
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions and data analysis
  • Demonstrable and current knowledge of trauma systems
  • Valid New Brunswick Driver's License

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands to finger, handle or feel and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds independently. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Although the position is based within a hospital-based office environment, regular exposure to the Emergency Department and other critical care areas within hospitals is required. In addition, travel throughout the province and in all seasons is required, as are presentations and public appearances outdoors or in less controlled conditions than available within a hospital. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists with the development, implementation, and evaluation of strategic, operational and quality management plans for Trauma NB
  • Contributes and/or leads various trauma-related committees at the provincial, regional and/or local level, as determined by Trauma NB
  • Facilitates delivery of collaborative, optimal patient care through:
    • Identification of clinical care provided through chart review
    • Evaluation of care according to accepted guidelines and expected standards of practice
    • Providing support to clinicians where opportunity to improve care is detected, assisting staff in problem-solving issues related to care of trauma patients
  • Coordinating and participating in multi-disciplinary meetings to identify, implement and evaluate broader opportunities for improvement
  • Completes essential data collection and reporting through:
    • Ensuring that accurate and complete local data for trauma patients is captured by clinicians
    • Accurately entering required data elements into applicable trauma registries
    • Collection, entering and reporting of Trauma NB Quality Indicators as applicable.
  • Assists in ensuring system compliance with all current guidelines and accreditation requirements
  • Collaborates with all other Trauma NB staff and physicians to ensure consistent, trusted and valued support of trauma care across New Brunswick
  • Prepares and submits reports as required
  • Leads or arranges injury prevention, education and research programs in the local area as determined by Trauma NB
  • Maintains current knowledge of trauma care via literature review, trauma rounds and trauma conferences
