Churchill River Production Engineer

The Churchill River Production Engineer is accountable for establishing short and long term production schedules for the Muskrat Falls and Churchill Falls generating facilities in a manner that provides for the maximization of the long term energy-generating potential on the Churchill River.

The incumbent shall administer responsibilities in a manner which is consistent with established goals, values, policies and procedures, and codes of conduct.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive hydrological model of the Churchill River facilities including the interconnecting transmission facilities
  • Review and provide recommendations regarding river inflow forecasting, as well as hydro meteorological stations
  • Determine individual and total power to be produced to satisfy the aggregate quantity of power required each hour at specified delivery points, done so in accordance with environmental operating constraints (minimum flow, min / max reservoir elevations, ice formation / blockage, flood control)
  • Develop policies and procedures necessary to ensure compliance with the Water Management Act (WMA) including:
  • Ensuring forecasts for delivery requirements, inflows, potential spills, generating capability and storage volumes are received;
  • Acounting for and recording all banked and spilled energy;
  • Record management and retention;
  • Preparing reports for energy producers on the Churchill River, Water Management Committee, the Minister of Natural Resources and the Public Utilities Board.
  • Prepare annual budgets, manage financial resources, and arrange for the preparation of financial statements
  • Advise administration staff as required to maintain records, correspondence, reports, etc. required to meet the requirements of the Water Management Agreement and Water Management Regulations
  • Maintain strong lines of communication between the required parties

Job Requirements:

You are an effective communicator, are able to spot and share key messages with the right audience. You are curious, inquisitive and enjoy digging in to get to the heart of a challenge and make reasoned recommendations, supported by logic and data. You are responsive to feedback, welcome diversity, and enjoy working both independently and with a small team. Learning new fields and sharing your findings energizes you, and you welcome the opportunity to work in an evolving department.

You have a degree in Engineering from an accredited university program with a minimum of seven years work experience. Significant and recent experience in the application of water management software used to model operation and scheduling of hydroelectric resources would be an asset. You have proven report writing and presentation skills. Other combinations of qualifications and related experience may be considered.
