Here's where you'll be focusing:
Responsible for the negotiation and administration of smaller Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) within his/her area of responsibility and supports the Director's assistant during larger sets of negotiations:
- Lead the negotiations team and act as principal negotiator during certain sets of negotiations under his/her responsibility
- Determine negotiations approach to align with the Company's strategic direction
- Fully understand the competitive landscape and uses the data to prepare for and negotiate CBAs
- Understand and work toward maximum bargaining mandate on all major terms for each set of negotiations prior to entering into negotiations with a union
- Maintain negotiating notes and file as required
- Update the Director of Labour Relations on progress and take direction as required
Administration of CBAs, grievances and arbitrations:
- Ensure proper administration of CBAs
- Follow processes on maintaining files on all original labour contracts and notes taken during negotiations, grievances and Arbitration hearings
- Provide prompt, firm and accurate counsel to other Leaders who contact the LR department for guidance or assistance
- Ensure that grievances are promptly and properly processed to avoid or minimize liability to the Company
- Prepare for and represent the Company at Arbitration hearings
- Work with HR and Operations on the resolution of grievances as requested
Incident Management:
- Review all incident reports and provides recommendations on discipline to operators ensuring that discipline is correctly and consistently administered
Strikes and lock-outs:
- Work with the Director of Labour Relations, HR, Operations to execute strike and lock-out plans as required
Labour Data Base
- Maintain wage and other comparisons for all direct competitors for each collective agreement
- Maintain detailed clause by clause comparison of collective agreements
What you have to offer:
- Undergraduate degree in business, HR or Labour Relations
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience
- Minimum 3 years experience of leading negotiations teams
- Experience resolving labour grievances and representing the organization during arbitration hearings
- Bilingualism is an asset
- Excellent knowledge of applicable legislation
- Ability to negotiate, draft, and administer labour contracts
- Ability to work with a variety of personnel including; union leadership, outside attorneys, and government agencies
- Ability to understand, work with and analyze financial data, empirical data and various reports
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and multi-task to achieve results while meeting stated deadlines
- Ability to work closely with leadership to execute negotiations strategies
- Ability to train/counsel local leadership in prevention and resolution of labour relations issues
- Must be highly detail oriented with an ability to lead a negotiating team
- Ability to work as a team member during work stoppages including strikes and lock-outs
- Excellent computer and Internet skills
