The Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development is seeking an individual to join the Forest Operations and Development Branch as the Assistant Coordinator of Forest Nursery Operations, at Island View.

As a member of the Forest Nursery Operations team and reporting to the Coordinator, Forest Nursery Operations, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading and overseeing all indoor growing activities spanning nine greenhouse complexes to successfully produce the targeted number of seedings (currently at 19.5 million). Responsibilities will include the following: developing and maintaining a comprehensive growing plan to align with current production levels; developing a crop management plan to optimize germination success and seedling growth and health; ensuring quality control targets are met and supported with a rigorous inspection and sampling program; ensuring necessary supplies are maintained by direct ordering or procurement and in consultation with the Nursery Operations Coordinator and Maintenance Supervisor; supervising seasonal, casual and student employees, including scheduling and assigning casual and student staff resources, work planning, completing performance appraisals, monitoring leave and hours worked; ensuring compliance with health and safety procedures and department and nursery policies; participating with management team in short and long term planning and strategic planning when required; and participating in Daily Management with identified teams. Other related duties may be assigned as required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: A diploma from a recognized two-year Forest Technology Program or a two-year Horticulture or Agriculture Technology Program, or equivalent; a minimum of four (4) years of progressively more responsible related post-diploma experience in a nursery environment. A minimum of one (1) year of supervisory experience, is required. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

ASSET QUALIFICATION(S): Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate a minimum of four (4) years of progressively more responsible related post-diploma experience in a forest nursery environment. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

  • Ability to use office technology, software and applications;
  • Planning and organizing skills.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be prepared to: work a 40-hour week; work extended hours and weekends when necessary to meet operational requirements; travel within and outside of the province as required; work with a high degree of independence and judgement; possess a valid class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent.

SALARY: $60,996 to $76,622 per annum
