Recreation Development Specialist II, Permanent Full Time
(Regional Residential Support Team)
Mental Health and Addictions, Grand Falls - Windsor Community Health Building, Grand Falls Windsor or McCurdy Complex, Gander

Definition of work:
This is an advanced professional level position involving a high degree of responsibility, autonomy and independence. The Recreation Development Specialist II (RDS II) is an integral member of the Regional Residential Support Team that provides clinical wrap around services to individuals with complex needs who are either homeless or at risk of homelessness. The RDS II is responsible for:
* Supporting clients of mental health and addictions (MHA) services through their community-based recovery and providing linkages regarding leisure and recreational opportunities from acute care services and the community.
* Having clinical responsibility and oversight for therapeutic recreation (TR) services in MHA, including services in the Community (Juniper Place, additional stepped-down facilities and wraparound community-based services in the region) and at CNRHC, such as providing regular consultation and collaboration with community partners, as well as all other internal and external stakeholders.
* Planning, implementing, coordinating, evaluating and overseeing TR services including supervision of other RDS I and Recreation Therapy Workers.
* Supporting and educating staff of mental health and addiction services, stakeholders and community partners about the Leisure Ability Model: Functional Interventions, Leisure Education and Recreation Participation.
* Educating patients/clients and family members in the assess, plan, implement, evaluate and document (APIED) process for TR.
* Development of care plans in collaboration with the Residential Support Team and documentation through CRMS. Liaise with Regional TR Manager and Regional Manager of MH&A to ensure appropriate and accurate information is shared/recorded.
* Suggesting programming activities/interventions/education based on individual needs and leisure interests of patients/clients and community groups.
* Implementation of TR focused Interventions based on care plan and patient/client leisure interests, in relation to client recovery plan.
* Evaluation of functioning and progress of the patient/client based on established care plan, review of treatment and the patient's/client's adherence and satisfaction with the care plan.
* Representing TR at multidisciplinary meetings and community education workshops.
* TR research and TR focused presentations to MH&A clients, families, staff and community partners during community meeting, or as required, to provide continuing education.
* Providing input into program and policy development, project development, quality initiatives, participating in evidence-based practice, education, and community capacity building.
* Supporting MHA staff and community partners with special event/education planning and implementation

The successful candidate will use extensive knowledge and skills gained through experiences in TR to address the needs of clients as part of a multidisciplinary team, with a goal of supporting individuals to live safely and effectively in their community. The RDS II will establish a preventative, integrated, person and family centered approach driven by individualized assessment of needs and client individual choice to promote recovery. The successful candidate must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for promoting and supporting person-and family-centered care, demonstrate a commitment to safety and partner with all team members to improve worker and patient safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks and implementing improvements.

Required qualifications:
* Baccalaureate degree in Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation with major course work in Therapeutic Recreation, approved by Central Health.
* Minimum: 4 years' experience, in the last five (5) years, working as a Recreation Development Specialist in addictions and/or mental health setting.
* Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the areas of assessment, assessment tools, program design/protocols, client care plans, clinical documentation, therapeutic interventions, facilitation techniques, volunteerism, leadership, supervision, workload measurement and group dynamics.
* Demonstrated competencies in problem solving and program planning; be self-motivated, as well as, able to work both collaboratively and with a high degree of independence and initiative.
* Demonstrated ability to educate others and to establish and maintain effective working relationships, as well as, exhibit strong oral and written communication skills.
* Demonstrated positive, respectful and sensitive approach to the needs of clients.
* Daily use of a private vehicle for employment.
* An unrestricted Class IV driver's license.
* Current BLS certification.
* A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required for this position.
* A satisfactory Certificate of Conduct from the RCMP or local police authority.

Preferred Qualifications:
* A current member of NLTRA/CTRA.
* Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) with the NCTRC.

Hours of Work: 75 hours bi-weekly (Shift work may be required)
Salary: CG 39 ($37.94 - $42.46)
