Job Opportunity: People and Culture Generalist (Permanent)

Reporting to the Manager, People and Culture, the Generalist will consult, coach, and support all levels of employees and management within a non-unionized and unionized environment. Committed to understanding the business needs within Invest Nova Scotia, the Generalist will contribute to the People and Culture unit by providing advice and consultation on all human resource related matters; assisting in the design and implementation of new human resource strategies, policies, and processes; and building strong and respectful relationships that promote human resource programs and services to enhance the culture and work environment.

In this role, the successful candidate will:

  • Work independently on routine tasks, providing support throughout the organization on all human resource related matters related to, but not limited to, recruitment, attendance and absence management, staffing issues and concerns, payroll, employee and labour relations, issues resolution, performance management, talent management, collective agreement interpretation and application, and workforce planning.
  • Support the Manager, People and Culture to provide advice and guidance in the identification, development and execution of human resource policies, procedures and guidelines that will improve processes and employee engagement.
  • Represent the business unit by building respectful relationships with colleagues, management, employees, and external partners through collaboration and sharing of expert knowledge and advice.
  • Develop employee and managerial knowledge of human resource practices and programs by participating in working groups, providing coaching on HR related matters , delivering specialized training and/or lunch and learns.
  • Identify and address new and emerging client needs by keeping abreast of best practices and human resource trends.
  • Work closely with and act as the primary backup to the People and Culture Associate, contributing to the following functions: ESS/SAP entries and updates, payroll documentation, onboarding, maintenance of job descriptions, employee files and document management, communications and updates on human resource programs and initiatives such as Years of Service Awards, First Aid Training, etc.

Education/Professional Experience:

As the successful candidate you possess a bachelor's degree with a concentration in Human Resources Management, combined with more than five (5) years of relevant experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Key Competencies:

  • Proven experience in delivering human resource services including recruitment, performance management, payroll, labour relations, consulting services, conflict resolution, training, and development.
  • In-depth knowledge of Nova Scotia Labour Standards legislation and regulations.
  • Proven experience working in a unionized environment.
  • Proficient knowledge of MS Office and HRIS systems; experience with SAP would be considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety legislation and regulations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience applying human resource policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and priority management skills.
  • Creative and decisive problem solver.
  • Knowledge of diversity, equity, inclusion practices and accessibility standards.
  • Experience with change management and project management considered an asset.
