Raw materials and finished products from Vale's Sudbury and Newfoundland and Labrador operations are transported to Port Colborne for processing.Applying the latest technologies to sustainably mine the critical minerals that power electric vehicles, build renewable energy solutions, and help develop life-saving medical equipment is at the heart of what we do.We invite you to be part of our evolution.Our Team: The Vale Engineering & Studies Group has North Atlantic accountabilities to deliver engineering design and studies for the various Vale mines and plants in the North Atlantic region including Sudbury.The Opportunity We are currently seeking a Superintendent Civil Structural Engineering to join our Engineering & Studies Group – North Atlantic based in Sudbury, Ontario. This is a permanent position.The role is the division's structural expert, having both experience and understanding of mining infrastructure including standards and codes. As part of the role regular trips to underground mines and to the various surface plants as well as periodic travel to other Vale North Atlantic facilities within Canada will be required.As a Superintendent Civil Structural Engineering, you will be responsible to provide civil and structural engineering services to Vale's various plants and mines as well as to supervise a group of engineers and designers producing scope of work and civil and structural engineering packages. Excellent leadership skills are required as is the capacity for producing innovative engineering solutions to operating and maintenace problems. Additionally, in this position you will:
- Lead a team of design personnel to complete complex engineering designs and studies
- Provides technical direction for complex civil/structural engineering designs and guide other design personnel.
- Responsible for integrity of designs produced under their technical direction and legally approves drawings as per the Professional Engineers Act.
- Apply sound engineering knowledge and ensure all designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and regulations, and are economically feasible.
- Complete, approve, and review complex engineering estimates, drawings, calculations, functional specifications, data sheets, equipment specifications, scopes of work, Front End Loading (FEL) studies and detailed design packages.
- Mentoring and training to design and engineering personnel.
- Ensures in-house Vale structural engineering design standards are updated and maintained.
- Highlight structural issues and, make recommendations based on field inspections and audits, and prepare the relevant reports.
- Interact regularly with the plants and mines as a subject matter expert providing technical guidance.
- Provide reviews of consultant's work performed on assigned Vale engineering projects.
- Acts as the Structural Technical Authority for the Sudbury Operations.
- Makes recommendations on actions to be taken to address MOL orders and deficiencies
- Provide direction and assistance in identifying infrastructure areas that requires repair, replacement, modification, or removal from service.
- Engineering Degree in Structural Engineering with a Professional Engineering designation preferred.
- A minimum of 11 years' experience.
- Excellent leadership skills.
- Robust knowledge of structural design and analysis for various types of structures.
- Strong knowledge of steel, concrete, masonry, and timber design.
- Knowledge of various mining, smelting, and refining, structures.
- Experience in planning and estimating engineering hours for design projects.
- Proficiency writing equipment specification and construction scopes of work.
- Understanding and application of risk assessment and process hazards review processes.
- Familiarity with the latest codes, acts, regulations, and up to date on technology and developments in the design field.
- Ability to work independently to achieve outcomes with minimum supervision.
- Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of programs (Excel, Word, Power BI).
