Job Information and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Dean of Science and in operational collaboration with the HR OH&S Wellness Consultant, the Safety Advisor, Science Activities will:

  • Acts as a resource to faculty, staff, and students engaged in science activities to provide advice and identify resources needed on matters related to occupational health and safety.
  • In consultation with faculty, staff and the Science Safety Committee, develops and implements faculty-wide and site-specific safety policies, plans, and guidance documents for both on- and off-campus science activities.
  • Assists in the identification of hazards associated with science research and teaching activities, and identification of appropriate control measures to mitigate or suitably minimize associated risk.
  • Assists faculty, staff, and students in appropriate selection of personal protective equipment.
  • In consultation with the Science Safety Committee, develops and implements a process to enable regular Faculty of Science safety inspections (laboratories, supply and storage rooms, fume hoods, biological safety cabinets, safety showers and eyewash stations, first aid kits, fire protection equipment, etc.) at intervals that align with legislative requirement, university policy, and best practice.
  • Follows up on safety incidents, concerns, and complaints; recommends corrective action(s) when appropriate and supports their design and implementation to continually improve safety of science activities.
  • Maintains the Faculty of Science safety website by ensuring that appropriate content is present and regularly updated.
  • In collaboration with faculty, staff, and the Science Safety Committee, disseminates safety policies, plans, and guidance documents for both on- and off-campus science activities.
  • Assists in the determination of safety training needs for faculty, staff, and students conducting science activities.
  • Develops and delivers safety training programs e.g., WHMIS training where appropriate.
  • Identifies external training resources/providers, as required, and coordinates delivery of training.
  • Maintains safety training records for faculty, staff, and students

Experience and Education Requirements

To be the successful Safety Advisor, Science Activities you will have:

  • Undergraduate science degree. A graduate degree is considered an asset.
  • Occupational health and safety training from an approved program.
  • Minimum of two years directly related experience.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Technician, (CRST), or Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) preferred.
  • Experience in delivering occupational health and safety programs is required.
  • Proven knowledge of the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to use discretion in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.
  • Computer competence essential.
  • Experience in an academic environment is preferred.
