Course Title: EDUC 5623 FA02 - Group Counselling: Theory and Practice
Contract Term: August 15, 2023 - December 31, 2023 (Fall)

Course Description: This course provides a conceptual and experiential introduction to group work theory, models, skills, strategies, and techniques. It affords opportunity for the acquisition and application of self-awareness, knowledge, and competencies related to group counselling and leadership. Students explore group development, process, and dynamics; therapeutic factors; facilitator and member roles; ethical and legal considerations; and cultural and other diversity considerations.

Acadia University's Counselling Program is accredited with the Council on Accreditation of Counsellor Education Programs (CACEP) and meets the requirements for post-graduation national certification with CCPA and provincial registration with NSCCT. As such, all courses in the program have required core competencies that students must attain. Instructors are advised to consult with the Counselling Program Coordinator to identify the specific competencies relevant to the course they teach. A template is provided to instructors so that they may indicate competencies addressed in their course outlines.

Qualifications: The successful applicant must possess at minimum a master's degree in the field (Counselling, Counselling Psychology, Social Work or related area), be registered/certified with a professional counselling body (Registered Counselling Therapist with the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists, Certified Canadian Counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, Registered Social Worker, or Registered Psychologist with the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology preferred), and have extensive and current professional experience in group counselling.

Preference will be given to those applicants who meet one or more of the following criteria: have engaged in scholarship in a related area, have formal academic training in counsellor supervision and/or possess a counsellor supervision credential (e.g., CCC-S), hold a doctoral degree in Counselling or Counselling Psychology or related area, or have completed relevant coursework in a doctoral program.

NOTE: Candidates should also be prepared to potentially teach this course in a hybrid learning approach, using a blend of in-person and synchronous and asynchronous on-line and/or remote delivery platforms.
