JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the head of the Family Medicine Department and the medical director concerned, the community palliative care family physician performs clinical work delivering general medical care to patients requiring palliative care, especially people at home, in care homes or in another community facility. The physician may participate in the development and implementaion of regional and provincial initiatives in palliative care.

The community palliative care family physician works on the study, advancement in the field, evaluation and medical management of pain, suffering and quality of life throughout the continuum of life and death for patients with chronic or potentially fatal diseases and throughout the grieving process of patients' families.

The duties of the community palliative care family physician include medical services to patients at the end of life and may require close collaboration with various health professionals.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Degree from a recognized medical school and residency granting a licence in family medicine – A recognized medical school is a school that meets the following criterion: Accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) (in the United States);
  • OR Listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with a note for Canada under the Sponsor Notes tab;
  • Training in palliative care (certificate of additional competency from the College of Family Physicians of Canada) or commitment to take such training within set timeline – This is a requirement for the recruiting and hiring of one or more physicians who have advanced competencies, have taken additional medical training and have experience in palliative medicine. The goal is to ensure continuous follow-up in a hospital setting and to provide comprehensive palliative care in the community, as well as to ensure that Vitalité Health Network is in compliance with the provincial palliative care program (NB Palliative Approach to Care Competency Framework). Self-study modules are available on the Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians (CSPCP) website to prepare for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada exam;
  • Licence from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick;
  • Active member of the Canadian Medical Protective Association or equivalent liability insurance association;
  • Member of the New Brunswick Medical Society;
  • Privileges with Vitalité Health Network;
  • Registration with New Brunswick Medicare;
  • Ability to communicate with colleagues, patients, families and visitors with tact and courtesy;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Physical ability to perform the assigned work;
  • Good work history (performance and attendance);
  • Adherence to professional ethical principles, the Network's management philosophy, and organizational values;
  • Compliance with the rules of confidentiality set by Vitalité Health Network.
